Faces Boulter in runoff
Gilbreath supports
Gramm’s policies
Houston businessman Wes
Gilbreath faces Beau Boulter of
Amarillo In a runoff election
April 12 that will decide the
Republican candidate for U.S.
Senator,
The winner of the runoff will
be up against Incumbent U.S.
Senator Lloyd Bentsen, a
Democrat, in the November
general election.
Gilbreath was the top vote-
getter in the March 8 primary
election, winning seven of the 10
largest cities in the state and 70
percent of the counties that had
Republican primaries.
His experience as a
businessman qualifies him as a
senator, he says.
“I’ve been a self-made
businessman for 25 years,”
Gilbreath says. “That, to me, is
basically what government is
about — running a big business.
“Since I am a businessman,
my abilities are in recognizing a
problem and solving it, and that
does not include throwing money
at the problem,” he says.
Gilbreath fully supports the
Sen. Phil Gramm’s efforts to
tightly control federal spending
and balance the budget, and
says he will not support more
federal taxes.
Instead he advocates creating
more jobs to put more people to
work.
“We would have less taxes
because there would be more
people ... and businesses involv-
ed,” Gilbreath says.
As a senator, he would focus
on programs to increase
economic development and br-
ing more industry and Jobs into
Texas through private sector-
government partnership.
Gilbreath supports completion
of the Navy’s Homeport and the
campaign to bring the Super Col-
lider to this state.
He would also like to see more
WE8 GILBREATH
emphasis placed on a national
energy policy and strong na-
tional defense.
Preservation of strong family
values, protection of the Social
Security system, programs to
help single parents and the
return to basics in education are
other goals Gilbreath would
focus on as a senator.
He also supports current
foreign policy of providing aid to
the Nicaraguan Freedom
Fighters and protection of
American Interests around the
world with strong military
presence.
An investment businessman,
Gilbreath also has long been in-
volved with youth groups,
church projects, scholarships
and Republican Party work.
He has served as treasurer of
the Construction Industry Coun-
cil of Houston, was past presi-
dent of the Sun Valley Civic Club
and is a member of the Lions and
Elks Clubs.
Gilbreath also serves on the
executive committee of the Free
Market Foundation In Dallas.
