the money VA pays for burial
be used this way?
A--VA does not haveaceme-
tery system of Its own. It has
a few small plots near VA hos-
pitals and domlclllarles where
veterans who have died In these
facilities have been burled, but
most of this space Is now full.
Chances are you could not be
burled anywhere near your
home If you chose one of the
few available plots. The VA
burial expense payment can be
made regardless of the burial
place.
Q--I am drawing VA pension
under the so-called ‘old law,"
and wonder if I can change to
the "new law?"
A—Yes. Before deciding,
however, we suggest you dis-
cuss it with a VA representa-
tive.
Q--One of my employees is
a veteran of the United States
Army, but Is a foreign national
citizen. What benefits does he
have as a veteran?
A--Generally, he Is entitled
to the same benefits as a U.S.
citizen who Is a veteran.
Q--My boss Is willing to set
up an on-the-job training pro-
gram for me. How can I get
VA approval so that I can draw
GI benefits for this training?
A--Contact your nearest VA
office for complete Informa-
tion and assistance.
Q--under what conditions
are the wife and children of a
living veteran eligible for ed-
ucational assistance under the
GI bill?
A--when the veteran has
been given a permanent 100
per cent service - connected
disability rating by the Vet-
erans administration.
Q--I am a Viet Nam vet-
eran, and would like to know
If I am entitled to a business
loan from the VA?
A--The Small Business ad-
ministration has a loan plan
for Viet Nam era veterans
which gives this group approx-
imately the same entitlement
as the former GI Business loan
gave veterans of WW II and
Korean Conflict servlet. Sug-
gest you check with SBA to
see If you qualify.
Q--1 am a female veteran
receiving non-service connect-
ed pension. Can I claim my hus-
band as a dependent?
A--Yes. Contact your near-
est VA office for proper guid-
ance.
Q--My husband has not
changed the beneficiary on his
National Service Life Insur-
ance policy since our mar-
riage. He says it is not ne-
cessary as the insurance Is
automatically paid to the wife.
Is this so?
A--thls Is not true. Insur-
ance proceeds are paid to the
beneficiary last designated In
writing by the Insured. If none
Is designated, or no designated
beneficiary survives the In-
sured, proceeds will be paid to
the estate.

QUESTION: When I become
62 this year, I want to retire
and get social security bene-
fits, but I can’t find any docu-
ment to prove my date of birth.
Now what can I do?
ANSWER: Get In touch with
any social security office, and
the people there will be glad
to help you. Although you may
not have a copy of a birth or
baptismal certificate, one of
these may still be shown on of-
ficial records. If not, there are
other documents, such as a
census record, a school rec-
ord, or an Insurance policy,
that can be used to establish
your age.
QUESTION: I’m covered by
both parts of Medicare, hospl -
tal and insurance and medical
Insurance. Recently my doctor
told me that I must wear spe-
cial orthopedic shoes. Can I
submit this shoe bill to Medi-
care for payment?
ANSWER: No. Orthopedic
shoes and other support de-
vices for the feet are not cov-
ered by Medicare unless the
shoes are an Integral part of
a leg brace.
QUESTION: I’m only 16, but
I want to start looking for a
part-time job. Do I need a
work permit before I come In
to get a social security num-
ber?
ANSWER: No, you don’t need
a work permit, but you should
apply for asocial security num-
ber as soon as possible. The
Social Security administration
must screen every application
against the national files In
Baltimore, Maryland, to make
sure that duplicate numbers
aren’t Issued or that an appli-
cant hasn’t been Issued a so-
cial security number before.
This process may take as much
as six weeks.
QUESTION: I’ve heard that
disabled people can now get
Medicare at any age. Is this
possible?
ANSWER: Disabled workers
at any age, disabled widows
between 50 and 65, and chil-
dren who became disabled be-_
fore age 22 can be covered
by Medicare If the person Is
entitled to disability benefits
under Social Security or Rail-
road retirement. This Medi-
care coverage for the disabled
person will begin either July
1973, or after a disabled per-
son has been entitled to dis-
ability payments 24 consecu-
tive months, whichever is later.
QUESTION: I’ve raised my
two grandchildren since their
parents were killed in a car
accident when the children were
small. I’ve heard that when I
retire next year, they can re-
ceive social security on my
record. Is this correct?
ANSWER: A grandchild can
become entitled on his grand-
parent’s record If the child's
parents are disabled or dead,
and the child Is living with and
being supported by the grand-
parent when the grandparent
retires, becomes disabled or
dies.
QUESTION: It is my under-
standing that anyone receiving
social security benefits be-
cause of total disability will
be automatically enrolled In
Medicare. Is this true?
ANSWER: Yes, you do not
need to take action unless you
do not want the medical Insur-
ance which costs $6.30 a month,
beginning July, 1973. Since you
are receiving social security
payments the $6.30 will be with-
held from your June check
which you will receive on July
3. Disability Insurance bene-
ficiaries must have been en-
titled for two years as of July
1 to get Medicare; otherwise,
coverage begins with the 25th
month of entitlement.
