THE KNOW IT OWLS . s .
The universe was once a
ball hanging in the middle
of endless nothing! If all
this nothing is endless
where Is its middle? Then
one day the ball blew up.
The universe spread out
into all the stars in space.
This, the "big bang" theory
was written up by two very
imaginative scientists. They
got the Nobel Prize for their
presumptions. They enforc-
ed (they (think) the theory
that the whole universe is
expanding at a great rate.
The stars are running
away from each other. This
was first assumed some
years back because light
from distant stars bouncing
through a prism (triangle of
glass) when spread opt on a
screen showed a shift to the
lower reds of the spectrum.
(When you ride a train and
pass a ringing crossing
signal, as you ride away
from it the bell sounds!
lower and lower. This is
similar, but we are dealing!
with light waves.) It never
occurred to the cone heads
that light after traveling for
billions of years might just
get "tired." loaing tome of
its boop boop ah doop.
Hoyle came up with a
dandy years ago. Hit idea
was that space was nothing
tied together with holes.
Once It gets to vibrating.
ZIP — a hydrogen atom
comes out of nowhere, then
GEEP! There's another one.
and TFFT! still another.
In a few years two more
scientists will come up with
a different Idea of how It all
began. In the meantime wc
have not run out of greater
distances. Each new step,
peering further out into the
universe just shows more
stars. Yet. the whole thing
is supposed to be shaped
like a yoyo. It hasn't been
proven to be , do*.
