Band Students Perform Well In Solo & Ensemble Contest

BRASS Ensemble, First Division award was earned by (l-r) Bobby Coats, Rudy Garcia,
Mark Beutnagel, Bethany McCraw, Ricky DeLeon, Ruben Huerta, and Rudy Cardona in the
contest at Del Mar College.
Some twenty-four students
attended the U.I.L. Solo and
Ensemble Contest Saturday,
Mar. 6, at Del Mar College. The
ensembles were a Double-
Brass choir, a Clarinet En-
semble and a Saxophone
Quartet. The rest of the people
performed solos. The
Saxophone Quartet, made up of
Johnny Ganceres, E-b
Baritone Saxophone; Charleen
Neal lst, E-b Alto Saxophone;
Jessie Trevino 2nd E-b Alto
Saxophone; and Yolanda
Alvarado B-b Tenor Saxophone
received a II division rating.
Solo percussionest, Teri Stacy,
received a II division rating on
her performance and Joe
Oelschlegel got 'a II division
rating on his solo.
Eighteen students per-
forming either in solos or
ensembles received a I division
rating. Those receiving a I
were: Mark Beutnagel, Rudy
Cardona, Bobby Coats, Johnny
De Leon, Ricky De Leon,
Ruben Huerta, Rudy Garcia,
Bethany McCraw, Magdaleno
Del Bosque, Karen Hale,
Liodolee Salinas, De Anne
Ridenour, Claudia Zapata,
Felix Del Bosque, Janet Buff
and Katherine Coffin. The High
School Band attended a band
clinic at Banquete High School
Mar. 8 to help them prepare
for the U.I.L. Concert and Sight
reading Contest to be held at
Refugio March 26.
Insect Report
Boll weevil activity in-
creased again this week over
last week. Starting since Feb.
the total weevil catches for 8
traps for each succeeding week
were: 3, 2, 3 and 7 on March 10.
On March 15, the boll weevil
traps caught a total of 65
weevils. Fifty-six (56) weevils
were trapped at the Ansul
research farm near Weslaco
and 9 weevils were trapped at
the U.S.D.A. research farm,
also near Weslaco.
While the trap catches are
not necessarily true readings
of actual numbers of boll
weevils emerging from
diapause in your area,
