Events Planned
During Celebration
Many events are scheduled
during the nine-day Bicen-
tennial Celebration beginning
with a parade at noon on
Saturday, June 19th, in
downtown Sinton.
A soul food booth will be
located at Liberty Square at
parade time. A watermelon
feed and seed-spittin’ contest is
scheduled there after the par-
ade. A band concert will follow
at the courthouse and a
Father’s Day sale will be
Sinton Merchants will parry
out the theme, “Father of Our
Country.”
A featured event for
Saturday, Sunday and Monday
is the Bicentennial Historical
Experience to be held at Smith
Junior High School from 7-10
p.m. This event will allow
participation in events such as
quilting and churning butter
and historical times will be
displayed. Bill Sheeran is
chairman of this event, and
anyone wishing to furnish a
display is invited to contact
him.
On Sunday the emphasis will
be on religious services for
Father’s Day.
Monday, June 21, is Youth
Day. A two-hour free swim will
be held at the Welder Park
Pool, and other events are to be
announced.
Pioneer Day is Tuesday. A
dinner and reception is
scheduled for former city of-
ficials. The reception is public
and will be at the Lazy V Circle
N Building at 7:30 p.m. A
reception for senior citizens
will be at 3 p.m. at the Com-
munity Room of Sinton Savings
Association. A quilting bee and
domino party are planned for
“old-timers”.
Patriot’s Day will be Wed-
nesday, June 23. A VFW
ceremony will honor the
patriots serving in America’s
wars at 5 p.m. on the cour-
thouse lawn.
A Bicentennial Fashion Show
will be featured on Ladies’ Day
on Thursday, June 24 at
Liberty Square at 6 p.m. Hand
made garments will be
modeled and the winner? will
model at the pre-show later. A
bridge tournament is set from
1-5 p.m. at the Lutheran *
Fellowship Hall with Lynn +
Harris as chairman.
Friday, June 25 is Mexican-
American Heritage Day.
Beginning at 5 p.m., food
booths will be open at Pirate
Stadium, and the pre-show
will feature cultural events.
Joe Zapata and Father
Domingo De Llano are co-
chairmen. The Saturday
feature is “Almost Anything
Goes Today” at 7:30 at the
stadium. Beard Judging will be
held just before the start of the
competition.
Religious Freedom Day has
been set for Sunday, June 27. ,
. “Let Freedom Ring”, a joint,
religious service at the
stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. A
baseball game is to be played
at the Rob and Bessie Welder -
Park at 2:30 p.m. The Oilers
and Blacksox will play by early
baseball rules.
Pageant week is dress-up
week, and everyone is urged to
wear their early-day costumes.
The last of the promenades is
scheduled Friday, June 18. The
group leaves from City Hall at
5:30p.m. andendsat Kangaroo
Kourt on the parking lot of
Commercial State Bank.
Sinton’s Bicen Parade
Has Over 50 Entries
The Bicentennial Parade,
which will begin promptly at
noon Saturday, June 19, has
almost 50 entries including
marching groups, floats and
walkers.
Floats and cars will be
judged in commercial and non-
commercial divisions of
American History, Texas
History, Local History,
Novelty and youth.

Highway construction
contracts let by the State High-
way and Public Transportation
Commission include work in
Live Oak, Jim Wells, San
Patricio, Bee, Goliad, Karnes,
Nueces, Kleberg, Aransas and
Refugio Counties.
The work will be supervised
by District Engineer Roger Q.
Spencer.
A contract was awarded to
Pave-Mark Corporation of
Miami, Florida. Low bid was
$551,894.79.
The project, which will
require an estimated 125
working days, is for ther-
moplastic edge line stripping.
Contruction on highways
near Mathis include the
following:
SH 359 from Jim Wells
County line to FM 666 at
Mathis, and on to the Bee
County line, and from there to
US 181.
