Mrs. R. W. Williford Is Guest Speaker
For 25th Anniversary Service of W.S.C.S.
The Woman’s Soicety of Chris-
tian Service of the Wortham
Methodist Church observed the
25th anniversary of the organ-
ization of that body, in a meet-
ing which was held at the church
on Friday, August 20, at 10 am.
The meeting was opened with
the song, “Faith of Our Fathers,”
followed by the invocation by
Rev. Bill Reynolds, pastor of the
church.
Mrs. R. M. Wilson, president of
the local Woman's Society, wel-
comed the out-of-town guests
and members who were in at-
tendance. She called the roll of
the former presidents who had
served since the organization.
Those past presidents present
were: Mmes. R. W. Williford,
W A. Posey, B. F. Bounds, E. A.
Strange, J. P. Black, and Glenn
McCommon. Other presidents
not present were Mmes. O. H.
Howard, C. S. Ramsey, and H, C.
Boyd.
All charter members present
were recognized.
Mrs. J. C. LeFevre gave the
medi tation.
A special membership period
followed in which Adult Mem-
berships were presented to Mrs.
Walter Moore and Mrs. Tom
Keeling. Baby Memberships
were presented to Lawrence
Mack Butler, Jr., and Pamela
Lee Roark, the grandchildren of
Mrs. Ralph Butler, who is the
vice-president of the local soci-
ety, and to Jon Collins Rice, the
great-grandson of Mrs, W. D.
Moody. Attention was called to
the fact that many of the char-
ter members of the society had
been given Adult Memberships
and hope was expressed that
soon all would be honored. This
special membership signifies that
$25.00 is given to the mission
fund in honor of a deserving
member by friends, relatives, or
circles. A gold emblematic pin
is given to the recipient as a
token of the honor bestowed
upon her.
Following these impressive
presentations, Mrs. W. M. Le-
Fevre sang “1 Have a Hiding
Place,” accompanied by Mrs.
W. D. Moody at the organ.
At each birthday observance
a solemn tribute is paid to the
members who have departed this
life since the last observance.
Mrs. J. P. Black paid tribute to
Mrs. Lula Weidner, a faithful
member who passed away in
March of this year.
“Near the Cross” was sung
by the congregation, after which
Mrs. W. F. Eckhardt introduced
the morning speaker. Mrs. R. W.
Williford of Fairfield. Listing
her attributes as a good friend,
wife, mother, church leader, and
the first president of the Wor-
tham Woman’s Society of Chris-
tian Service, who took the office
when the two women's organ-
izations of the Methodist Protes-
tant and the Methodist Episcopal
churches were united in 1940,
Mrs. Eckhardt paid tribute to
her talents and ability in making
the transition a smooth and spir-
itual one.
Mrs. Williford used “Reflec-
tions of the Past and Glimpses
into the Future” as the basis of
her address. She vividly recall-
ed the prayerful preparations
preceding the final day when the
two groups merged to form the
Woman's Society of Christian
Service. To these prayers and
plans she gave credit for the
smooth transition. She recalled
the 72 members who signed the
charter membership roll on Sep-
tember 4, 1940, and read the list
of the first officers who served
with her. She also read the ori-
ginial charge she gave to the
members on that day and the
prayer of consecration.
She recalled that Mrs. Gid J.
Bryan, the first president of Cen-
tral Texas Conference Woman's
Society of Christian Service was
the speaker and the inspiration
gleaned from her talk gave mo-
mentum to the Wortham Wo-
man's Society for many years.
She digressed from the past
and emphasized the importance
of the next 25 years. She stated
that many events of importance
have transpired in the last 25
years, naming World War II, the
use of the atomic bomb, travels
and walks in space, the assassi-
nation of the young president
and racial disorders. She ad-
monished the members that the
future holds many challenges.
Though the Woman’s Society
is only 25 years old, millions of
dollars have been spent at home
and around the world to heal,
teach, and to spread the Gospel
to the people who have not heard
of Christ.
Mrs. Williford praised the lo-
cal society for having this an-
nual observance, stating that as
far as she knew the Wortham
Society is the only one which
comes together annually for a
Memorial Service, Special Mem-
bership time, and for fellowship
with each other on a day set
apart for this observance.
Mrs. B. F. Bounds gave the
benediction.
A covered dish luncheon con-
cluded the day’s program.

ford were: Mrs. A. R. Corn, Te-
