The new stringed music pro-
gram in the public schools is
shaping up with a concerted re-
cruiting effort starting in the
next few days in the district’s
four junior schools
helping hand Monday night by
agreeing to the purchase of
$3,785 in new stringed instru-
ments for the program.
The board agreed to buy 12
violas from Parker Music Co.

$1,326, and to purchase eight
(cellos and four double basses
from Chet’s Music Shop of
Baytown for $2,459. Chet’s bid
was lower than Parker’s on the
cellos, and Parker bid the
wrong item -on the double
basses.
Joseph Whitehead, the dis-
trict’s new stringed music in-
structor, said Tuesday that he
now teaching four young-
sters and will start meeting
with junior school children
Thursday and Friday to ex-
plain the program.
Whitehead also plans to send
out a letter to each sixth and
seventh grade child in the dis-
trict. He hopes the new instru
ments will be shipped withi
the next few weeks, so that stu
