By Sam Coleman, WUC, SCS
Word has been received from
Rocksprings that an election for
a supervisor will be held Thurs-
day, October 10, at 1:00 p. m. in
the Balentine Hotel. The elec-
tione is for a supervisor to the
Upper Llanos Soil & Water Con-
servation District.
Following the election there will
be a tour of a rotation deferred
grazing system on the Bill Die-
tert, Jr. ranch east of Rock-
springs. Dietert and others will
discuss problems in obtaining
proper distribution of grazing
control in connection with this
type of grazing will also be dis-
cussed.
State laws by which local peo-
and govern soil and water con-
servation districts require that
an election be held during the
first fifteen days in October in
each district. A supervisor is ele-
cted for a five year term. Since
there are five zones in a district,
the election location rotates year
to year.
Zone 5 of the Upper Llanos Dis-
trict includes generally that area
in Edwards County that is drain-
ed by the South Llano River.
Henry Kast is the present super-
visor. He has represented the
people of that area in conserva-
tion activities for ten years.
Previous supervisors have been
H. C. Whitaker and Hardin Tob-
in.
The law requires that the su-
pervisor and those voting in the
election own land in the area
they represent, be actively invol-
ved in agriculture and live in
Edwards or Kimble County. They
must be 21 years of age. There
is no requirement as to sex.
The program is open to all
who are interested. Rotation de-
ferred grazing is a method where
by pastures generally of similar
forage are grazed in a manner
that allows one or more pastures
to be rested at any given time.
Cricket Explosion
Caused By
Moist Year
In many respects crickets follow
the same behavioral pattern as
grasshoppers. When environmen-
tal conditions are favorable for
reproduction and host plants are
abundant, cricket populations sim-
ply explode. The differences lie
nrimarily in the fact that crickets
do better in wet years when host
mateial is prevalent. Winter
grasshopper survival is much bet-
ter in an extremely dry winter.
This is primarily due to reduced
parasite, predator and disease (of
the eggs) activity. This is signi-
ficant in a one-generation per year
species. Crickets are multi-gener-
ation thus, availability of adequate
food supply becomes an important
factor. This was available this
year.
Good rainfall brings abundant
host plant material. These popu-
lations primarily develop in the
range, then move into town be-
cause they are strongly attracted
to lights. This is the main reason
we have the most trouble with
them in town. Some towns in the
Midwest have begun using yellow
lights in town to cut down on migra
Mon or movement of crickets. If
the problem would become critical
and it would be possible to shut
out all store and street lights this
would certainly reduce the amount
of migration or movement into
town.
Generally these migrations only
last for a week to 14 days. Migra-
tion seldom occurs over any size-
able distance. The majority of the
crickets which have moved into
the towns in this area probably
were raised within 10 to 15 miles
of the vicinity. They do not mi-

grate hundreds of miles as is the
case of some of the migratory
grasshoppers. Migration occurs
when survival of the eggs and
mymphs is high; accompanied by
excellent host material for the gen-
eration to have adequate food to
reach maturity. Once maturity is
reached these adults will then
migrate in search of less conjected
areas. This migration is greatly
influenced by their positive photo-
tropic reaction.
The materials which are most
effective in killing the pests, once
they do become a nuisance in town,
are: carbaryl (Sevin), dieldrin,
DDT or toxaphene.
