CROSBY - The Crosby Cougars came
into the 2011-2012 basketball season as
the team to beat in District 19-4A.
Through the first five games, they are
still the team to beat.
The Cougars, who are 18-7 on the year,
took a giant step toward repeating as con-
ference champions with last week’s
thrilling 42-40 home victory over the
Goose Creek Memorial Patriots.
The victory improved Crosby to 5-0 in
league play. C.E. King is one game back
at 4-1, while Dayton, GCM and North
Forest are tied for third at 3-2.
“That was a good win for us,” said
Crosby head coach Edwin Egans. “They
have a talented team.”
The Cougars were ahead by nine mid-
way through the fourth quarter before
GCM put on a furious rally.
“We were in control most of the game,”
Egans said. “We always had a five- or six-
point lead. But they never gave up. They
kept fighting all the way to the end.”
Crosby will try and carry over its
momentum to tonight’s 19-4A home game
with Dayton. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
“Coach (Butch) Hadnot is doing a great
job with them,” Egans said of the
Broncos. “They are playing more of an
up-tempo style, they play a lot of kids and
they try and wear down their opponents.
“We are lucky to have the game at
home,” he added. “But we still need to go
out and give it a good performance.”
Dayton is led by 6-foot-6 twins Bryan
and Ryan Alford.
“They have four kids 6-6 or bigger,”
Egans said. “We are going to have our
work cut out for us.”
Egans said the Cougars must do a better
job of rebounding over the final nine dis-
trict games.
“We need to clean up our rebounding
responsibilities and our defense is not
where it is supposed to be,” he added.
“We have been fighting injuries since
right before the Christmas break. We have
had no chance to go five-on-five (in prac-
tice) over the last month. That has kind of
slowed our progress down.
“But the good thing is we still have
room to improve,” he added. “I don’t
think we have played our best basketball
yet.”
T.J. Stewart leads Crosby with an aver-
age of 16 points per game. Keldrick
Williams also is averaging 14 points per
contest, Raelon Singleton is scoring 12
points per game and LaChad Chatman is
averaging 11 per contest.
“We have spread it out pretty well,”
Egans said. “Honestly, our best post play-
er, Paul Singleton, hasn’t practiced in
months. If we can get him going along
with the other guys, I will fee! a lot bet-
ter.”
Sophomore Tristan Egans also has
done a good job off the bench.
“He had a good game against Galena
Park,” Egans said of his son. “He came in
and hit a nice three and ended up with
nine points. I am proud of him. He will
have a much bigger role on the team next
year.”
In other District 19-4A games tonight,
Barbers Hill will travel to meet Goose
Creek Memorial, Lee will travel to meet
Galena Park and C.E. King will host
North Forest. All games will start at 7:30.
In District 21-5A, Ross S. Sterling
will travel to meet La Porte at 7 p.m.

Lady Eagles already eyeing playoffs
BY TODD HVEEM
sports@baytownsun.com
MONT BELVIEU - The Barbers
Hill Lady Eagles still have seven
District 19-4A basketball games
remaining in the regular season.
But it is tough for head coach Kit
Martin not to look ahead to the
Region I1I-4A playoffs.
“All roads lead to the playoffs,”
said Martin, who has guided her
club to a 26-3 overall and perfect 7-
0 conference record. “What we
want to do at this point is refine
everything we are doing and take
our execution of things to another
level.”
The Lady Eagles will start prepar-
ing for the playoffs by hosting
Goose Creek Memorial at 7 p.m.
today. GCM comes into the game at
13-6 overall and 5-2 in conference
play.
“They are a team that is going to
be a playoff team out of our dis-
trict,” Martin said of the Lady
Patriots. “They present matchup
problems for us. They run a five-out
motion. They set a lot of screens
and they are difficult to cover if you
are not ready to play. I am excited to
see us play a team like that.”
Barbers Hill defeated GCM by
more than 30 points in both teams’
district opener, but Martin knows
her team has to show up to play.
“This team plays hard every time
they toss the ball up,” Martin said.
“1 am not worried about the kids
looking ahead. It is not in their
make up to sluff off.”
GCM is led by the scoring of
guards Da’monae Jackson, Katie
Larson and Victoria Carr. The trio is
combining for 30 points per contest.
The Lady Eagles, who are ranked
No. 8 in the state by the TABC,
have only had one close district
game, that being a 50-49 victory at
Dayton. The Lady Eagles will host
Dayton again on Jan. 24.
“It is very important for us to try
and win district,” Martin said. “If
we could win it, we wouldn’t have
to face Beaumont Ozen or Manvel
until the regional finals. And they
would have to play each other in the
regional semifinals.”
The Lady Eagles are led by the
play of Kendall Shaw and
Shannon Evans, who are combin-
ing for almost 30 points and 15
rebounds per game.
Makenzi May and Kimi Carter
also have been playing well in
district play, Martin said.
“Kimi has become a solid ball
handler,” Martin said. “She is a
good scorer and an excellent
defender. It has been fun to watch
her excel.”
In other District 19-4A games
tonight, Lee will host Galena
Park, Dayton will host Crosby
and North Forest will take on
C.E. King. All games start at
7:30.
In a District 21-5A contest
tonight, Ross S. Sterling will host
La Porte at 7.
