China Builds Up Naval Power
By L, EDGAR PRINA
Copley News Service
WASHINGTON
(Sp) — Communist
China, now in the
midst of a vigorous
naval construction
program, has deploy-
ed its first cruise mis-
sile submarine, ac-
cording to a U.S. in-
telligence report.
“A ^cruise missile
attack submarine
(SSG) has been iden-
tified for the first
time in China,’’ it
said. “The SSG, ob-
served in imagery at
Wuhan shipyard, has
been given the inter-
im designator ‘Wu-
han-A.’ It is a modi-
fied Romeo (Soviet-
type) attack submar-
ine.”
At the same time,
Pentagon officials
disclosed that the
first Chinese-built nu-
clear-powered ballis-
tic missile submarine
had recently com-
pleted its initial sea
trials, during which it
launched several of
its weapons. Its class
name: Zxia.

pairs. While U.S. ex-

as to the rockets that
will be used by this

batants — the CSS-N-
1 and CSS-N-2.
According to the
authoritative British
publication Jane’s
Fighting Ships, China
is building destroy-
ers, frigates, fast at-
tack craft, amphibi-
ous ships and auxili-
aries, as well as sub-
marines.
“To those who ask,
’Have the Chinese
really got a navy?’ it
should be pointed out
that it currently con-
tains the third-larg-
est submarine force
in the world, the larg-
est number of light
forces and one of the
biggest amphibious
groups afloat,” John
Moore, Jane’s editor,
said in the foreword
to his latest edition.
