The Day
I Met r
Edward G. Robinson
/■ j. ■ i
It was a suxnmei day in 1945. I was in
La Cambe in war-tom France. As a young
G.I., I was workings with a Graves Registra-
tion outfit in our Aijaerican cemetery there.
On this quiet day I saw a mah with a U.S.O.
patch ofi his shouk&r walk slowly into the
cemetery. He moved from one grave marker to
The next, as if looking for a particular grave.
His eyes searched tie tags of the many men
who had lost their li\ es in the recent Norman-
dy invasion. 1
Approaching hirm I immediately recog-
nized that famous face. When I asked if I
could be of help, he said he was traveling with
a group of entertainers and felt he just had to
visit this place. He sap he wanted to see where
“so many gallant meijlare resting.”
We spent a goodly|>ortion of that afternoon
together, just he and|l, talking about the war
and its heartbreaks. | He was warm and ex-
tremely concerned about the cemetery and
the men buried in it. fle was tender and soft-
spoken, not at all as jiis movie^ depicted him.
After awhile, he not up to lieave. As we
walked away from th‘| graves, we approached
a canvased-off area, and he wanted to know
what it was. I told hir^i I didn’t think he’d like
to see it. But he insisted, sd I took him behind
the canvas. ■- * ~|v'
A body lay there awaiting identification and
burial. \ ' ; 3 %
The famous man took one look at that
body and his face turned pale. Walking quick-
ly away, he stared up at the sky. *fSo young,”
he said softly. “He’s §0 young he should be
home at the junior profit. God blesfe him!”
To this day I receive annual greeting cards
from Edward G. Robinson. Apparently he
still remembers me a| the lonely; G.I. with
whom he spent one ^ftemoon thousands of
miles from home in ai§ American cemetery in
France. And I remember him, not ak the tough
guy in “Little Caesar,’’ but as an [emotional
and very compassionate American.
