Reporter braves the crowds at
San Jac Mall on Black Friday
Baytown Sun photo/Eleska Aube spin
General Manager Mary Evans asks shoppers Friday what
stores they would like to see open at San Jacinto Mall.
Shoppers Makayla and Daniel Bean, who were there with
his wife and two sons, Quinton, 3, and Jordan, 1, on Black
Friday, said a bookstore tops his wish list.

with finding Christmas gifts.
In a previous column, l
wrote about the agony asso-
ciated with buying just the
right gifts for family mem-
bers. be it husband, daugh-
ters or in-laws.
So on Black Friday, I took
one for the Baytown Sun
team, I dived head first into
a sea of shoppers at San Ja-
cinto Mall to find out how
it was going because that's
what reporters do.
After all, aren't I respon-
sible for informing the folks
who avoided any retail store
on Black Friday as if it was
the black plague? Not ev-
eryone is eager to fight traffic
congestion, limited parking,
crowds and long checkout
lines to purchase a single
sweater for Grandpa Ray.
So as I pulled into a park-
ing space. I thought. “This
might not be so bad."
I strolled inside and be-
came dizzy.
There was a lot of activ-
ity and person after person
walking past me, arms load-
ed with bags or boxes that
contained special treats for
Christmas Day.
Upon meeting the mall’s
new general manager Mary
Evans, she informed me that
on Thanksgiving night, ma-
jor anchor stores that opened
a day ahead of Black Friday
were indeed busy.
Those stores JC Penney,
Sears and Macy's saw their
biggest crowds between
9 p.m. and midnight on
Thanksgiving Day. Fhcy ap-
parently continued the pace
on Friday.
Marshall's and other re-
tailers inside of the mall
were closed on Thursday but
opened on Friday as well.
At 6 a.m. on Black Friday.
Evans said it was pretty qui-
et at the “Big 3" but activi-
ty gained momentum by 10
a.m. everywhere.
Store shelves were lined
w ith discounted items, many
in disarray piles as people
plowed through heaps of
stufT to find just the nght
thing.
Evans took the opportuni-
ty to ask many v isitors exact-
ly w hat types of stores they
would like to see come to
San Jacinto Mall.
Of the 50 people Evans
had already surveyed, she
discovered that Victoria Se-
cret and Forever 21 stores
