BPD keeps criminal activity low on Black Friday
BY ALBERT VILLEGAS
albert v«Hegasra)baytownsun.com
Thousands of shoppers crowded
businesses across Baytown, particular-
ly Garth Road in hopes of purchasing
their ideal Christmas item. In response,
the Baytown Police !>epartment de-
ployed more officers to curb criminal
activity.
It seemed to delight Karla ( eballos
as she walked into Michael's with her
three children.
“I sensed a police presence when we
were at Academy this morning and it
cased the burden of worrying about
someone breaking into my car,” t’ebal-
los said “We had already been to two
places and we had things in the trunk.”
She didn't purchase big items that
she said would have forced her to place
merchandise on her scats in her vehi-
cle.
In preparation for the holiday shop-
ping season, BPD issued a no tolerance
plan. Marked police vehicles cruised
various shopping centers like San Ja-
cinto Mall, as well as big retail stores
like Wal-Mart, Conn's and Best Buy.
‘‘The Baytown Police Department
has increased patrol and presence
along Garth Road during the holiday
season. Residents need to give them-
selves enough travel time to arrive to
appointments on time as Garth Road
will he congested," said Baytown Po-
lice Det. Brian Parker.
According to Baytown police, there
were two incidents involving shoplift-
ing at Sears and Kohl's and one report
of a vehicle burglary at Tee Palace
C hinese Restaurant on Friday. At the
intersection of Baker and Garth roads,
a motorist struck a pedestrian. Two
Baytown residents were arrested, in-
cluding the driver, on charges of fail-
ure to stop and render aid. Outside of
Macy’s, a hit and run accident was re-
ported but the motorist w as located and
cited later in the day.
The climate in Best Buy was that of
urgency and security.
Various uniformed law enforcement
officers were inside the store walking
the aisles among the hundreds of shop-
pers.
“It makes you feel safe that nothing
bad is going to happen like you see on
TV," said Rhonda Marquez of Huff-
man.
She decided to come to Baytow n for
Black Friday instead of nearby Hum-
ble like last year because she thought
the crowds would he smaller.
“I don't like crowds because I had
had experience with pick pocketers;
there's still a lot of people here hut
not like in Deerbrook Mall,” Marquez
said.

could you have known about
the survey? Favorite stores
on customers’ wish list?
Lvans' survey came to
a halt early Friday when it
became difficult to stop peo-
ple.
“People are on a mission
today,” Evans chuckled
“They want to shop.”
James and Margie Coff-
man visited San Jacinto Mall
from North Shore because
it's close, fhe couple had
just started their store rounds
hut admitted they were not in
it “for the long haul."
“I actually came to ex-
change some things and look
for slippers.” Margie said.
“There are just too many
people out here.”
As for me, I picked up
items I thought would make
good gifts. Ihen I put them
hack. Some sales were good.
Some were not so good.
At the end. I bought noth-
ing. I guess it will be last
minute shopping for me -
again - right before Christ-
mas when sales continue.
In the meantime. I'll hug
my family tight and appreci-
ate our time together during
a season that can be rushed,
expensive, tiresome and
stressful.
But I'm not going to let
that get to me.
What is getting to me.
however, is this dam traffic
jam down Garth Road.
Can I get back to the office
please? I’m on deadline...
and my feet hurt from shop-
ping on Black Friday.
