♦ LIBRARY NOTES. ♦
♦ ♦
♦♦♦♦«♦ ♦♦♦♦♦♦
Twenty-six months of experience]
have shown that the patrons of the j
Sims Library take excellent care of j
the books they borrow. Comparative- j
ly few people turn down the corners j
of the -leaves use candy handker- |
chiefs or pencils as bookmarks; only
occassionally does a book bear signs
of having been give to the baby for a
plaything. Very seldom does a con-
templative reader underscore a fav-
orite passage or pencil annotations
in the margin. Even the children I
remember to wash their hands be-
fore using a book and to wrap the
volumes in paper when returning .
them in bad weather. All seem to
take pride in helping to keep the
books clean and attractive for fu-
ture readers. Books damaged are
cheerfully replaced or paid for. We
boast the unique record of not hav-!
ing lost a single book; as remuner-
ation was promptly made for the om>
volume destroyed by fire.
in view of these facts the trust- ;
ees have decided that a smaUer de-
posit will be satisfactory as a guar-
antee for the good care and safe re-
turn of books. With public-spirited
liberality they have cut in half the !
deposit formerly required for the j
home use of books. Hereafter one!
borrower's card will be issued upon j
deposit of $1; three cards upon de-
posit of $2.
Eighteen children enjoyed the
"Story Hour" on last Saturday after- :
noon with Mrs. J. L. Gammon as1
narrator. The experience of many j
libraries during the last ten years ι
has proved that story tailing is a !
potent means of influencing the '
reading of children. The Sims libra-|
ry has no intention of trespassing j
upon the rights of the home in this |
line but we are glad to co-operate |
with parents in directing the atten-1
tion of boys and girls to the best
in literature. To this end wet wel-
come children to the weekly "Story
Hour." I
