Study Club met recently at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Hoke McKim
with husbands of members' as
guests.
Places at the table were marked
with gifts from secret pals and
later in the evening, these were re-
vealed. After the supper the thirty
guests played canasta and bridge.
This was the final meeting of
the year and officers were installed
for the new year. The officers for
the past year will continue in
office.
Officers are Mrs. John Schmal-
zried, president; Mrs. Paul Jones,
vice-president; Mrs. George Nel-
son, secretary; Mrs. D. M. Tindale,
treasurer; Mrs. Jeff Stokes, par-
liamentarian.

Twelve Students
Are Graduated
From Monte Alto
GraduatioA exercises for the
eighth grade of Monte Alto school
were held Thursday evening. There
were 12 students graduated.
The Monte Alto band played
both the processional and reces-
sional. The valedictorian, Carolyn
Hurt, and the salutatorian, Linda
LaDuke, gave addresses. Others on
the' program included Leo Tripp,
who gave the benediction; A. J.
Barber, Jr., who read the class
will; Betty Jean Kuehn, who was
accompanied by Mary Lou Hiatt,
in a vocal number; and James
Shull, who read the class prophesy.
The entire class sang several of
their favorite songs, accompanied
by Miss Hiatt.
Awards were presented by Supt.
E. E. Keck and Principal L. O.
Fuqua presented the diplomas.
The class presented their teach-
er, Mrs. Doris Reavis, with an elec-
tric travel iron. She plans to go to
France in August.

Cigars Friday Morning
George Nelson, popular band di-
rector of Edcouch-Elsa. was pass-
ing 0ut cigars Friday morning.
The reason was a baby girl weigh-
ing 7 lbs. and 9 ozs. born Friday,
May 28, at Lawler Clinic in Mer-
cedes.
Mr. and Mrs. Nelson have named

Baptist Women Pledge
Daily Prayer Circle
The W.M.U. of the Baptist church
met at the church for their busi-
ness meeting Tuesday of last week
with Mrs. Elmer Sykes, president,
in charge.
The organization went on record
and pledged themselves to pray
daily at 10 a.m. for divine guidance
for the President of the United
States and members of his cabinet
that they may receive wisdom in
making decisions of government.
The W.M.U. will meet June 8 for
a study on stewardship from the
book, “Life of Women.”

Honored On Friday
With Farewell Party
A surprise paYty was held Fri-
day afternoon honoring Mrs. Doris
Reavis, who plans to leave for
Paris, France, in August. The party
was held at the home of Mrs.
Martha Thompson and the host-
ess was assisted by Mrs. A. J.
Barber and Mrs. B. L. Clark,
Monte Alto. Mrs. Reavis has
taught the eighth grade and di-
rected the band at Monte Alto the
past year.
The honoree received many use-
ful gifts from approximately 50
guests.
Church Women Study
Bible Lesson On Ruth
The women of the Church ,of
Christ held their Bible Study at
the church on Thursday morning
with fourteen members and two
visitors present.
Mrs. C. W. Tipton led the de-
votional and Mrs. R. R. Hill gave
the Bible lesson on “Ruth.”
Delta Women Attend
Auxiliary Tea Sunday
Mesdames Yates, Sari Carlos, and
J. S. Lambert, La Blanca, were
honor guests with other Gold Star
Mothers of the Valley Sunday
afternoon at a tea at the Civic
Center at Weslaco given by the
15th District American Legion
Auxiliary.
Corsages were given each of the
Gold Star Mothers present. The
Delta Unit of Elsa was hostess
with three other units. Others at-
tending from the Delta area were
Mrs. Hubert Rabe, president, Elsa;
Mrs. Walter Rabe, La Blanca, and
Mrs. Allen Case, Elsa.
Mrs. Dewey Acker, Mercedes,
president of the 15th District,
American Legion Auxiliary, re-
minded the Elsa unit that they are
to be hostesses for the Past Pres-
idents’ Parley in July.
The Elsa unit was presented a
citation signed by the national
president and the national secre-
tary for meritorious service for
carrying out national program on
membership.

Piano pupils of Mrs. A. E.
Branch were presented in recital
at the First Methodist Church of
Edcouch Tuesday evening.

OPERATORS HONORED
Perfect attendance awards were
presented to two employees of the
Edcouch Office of Southwestern
Bell Telephone Company, Wednes-
day, May 26. The awards were in
the form of a pencil with the em-
ployees’ names engraved in gold.
The employees receiving the
awards were Mrs. Ada Davis,
Evening Chief Operator, and Bar-
bara Devore, with nine and three
years perfect attendance respec-
tively.
City Of Elsa
Releases Data
On Improvements
Figures released this week show
that the City of Elsa completed the
paving of 20,500 feet of streets
during the past fiscat year at a
cost of $83,442,04.
Major purchases included a hew
2000 gallon per minute pump in-
stalled at the main canal to pump
water into the city reservoir. The
city also purchased a new street
sweeper and power weed mower
and a new building was erected at
the waterplant to house parts and
equipment.
The city retired $20,325 worth of
bonds and interest during this
period. Tax collections for 1953
were 84.5 % paid.
Money on deposit as of April 1,
1954, was as follows:
Waterworks, $4,885.72; general
fund, $6,935.92; meter fund,
$4,120.57; waterworks improvement
fund, $9,154.26; various bond funds,
$32,322.38. The total of money on
deposit is $57,322.85.
Daily Vacation School
Held By Methodists
Beginning June 14
The Methodist Daily Vacation
Bible School will be held from
June 14 to 23, beginning at 8:30
each morning. Classes will be over
at 11.
All ages from 3 years to 15 years
will be accepted.
Mrs. Emmett Cooper, La Villa,
will be director in charge and will
have approximately 25 teachers to
assist her. It has been announced
that the final program for the
school will be held the evening of
June 23 at the church.
Lions Club Announces
Installation Speaker
Lions Club will hold Ladies Night
and installation of officers on June
14 at the Central Cafetorium at
7:30.
Roland Sweer, news commentator
and radio announcer, will be guest
speaker.
Mrs. Clif Johnston entertained
the home Demonstration Club at
her home Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Roberts and
daughter, Gail, of Dousman, Wise.,
are visiting her parents,' Mr. and
Mrs. Clif Johnston, La Villa.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Blair and
children, Bruee and Evelyn, left
Friday for a three weeks visit with
relatives at darinda, Iowa.

To Joe Witts
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Witt, Elsa, are
the parents of twin boys born
May 26 at Lawler Clinic in Mer-
cedes. They weighed 6 % lbs. and
4% lbs. and have been named Al-
bert Dale and Elton Gale.
They have a four-year-old broth-
er, Leland.

Bobby Williams, Cherry ' Point,
N.C., is spending ten days with his
parents. Mr. and Mrs. Coy Wil-
liams. He is a storekeeper in the
Navy. He and his brother,
Williams, have been visiting* in

Teachers Honored
At Friday Luncheon
Teachers of the Edcouch-Elsa
school system were honored Fri-
day at a luncheori at the school
cafetorium. The meal was prepared
by Mrs. Howard Jarrett and her
staff of workers at the cafetorium.
The Elsa school made the place
cards and decorated the tables. At
the head table was a large map
of Texas with all the highways
leading to North Texas.
Approximately 65 teachers were
present.

For Graduates
Graduation' exercises were held
Thursday evening at the Edcouch-
Elsa High School Auditorium for
sixty graduates of the sixth grade
of Central Elementary School.
The program, given by the stu-
dents, included two talks, “The
Schools of Yesterday and Today”
by Carol Anne Peay and “The Op-
portunities ofan Education” by
Margarita Diana Moron. Catarina
Medrano gave the invocation and
Linda Joyce Robertson pronounced
the benediction. Mrs. Vivian Rus-
sell played the processional and
recessional. Flowers and decora-
tion were by Mrs. Clark P. Lewis.

diplomas, announced by Jerry Lynn
Ellis.
