Rev. George Wheeler
Is Honored On Birthday
Rev. George Wheeler, pastor of
the Mercedes Christian Church, was
honored on his birthday anniversitry,
on Monday evening, when officers of
the church entertained with a sur-
prise stag dinner for him at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Dawson.
Officers of the church are J. P.
Dawson, chairman of the Board; Miss
Genevive Dawson, treasurer of the
church; Mrs. Charles Chambers,
clerk; Mrs. Vera Crockett, secretary;
Mrs. C. F. Archer, pianist, and Mrs.
George B. Graf, choir director.
Rev. Wheeler rounded out one
year as pastor of the Mercedes
church, on the day of the celebrat-
tion. There was a large birthday
cake, topped with one large candle,
“for the year to come”, and sym-
bolic of the one year spent in Mer-
cedes.
Present for this enjoyable event
were Charles Coleman, Jim Chap-
man, J. D. Karst, H. Miller, E. H.
Squires, Horace Jones, D. W. Scogin,
George B. Graf, Jr., Harvy Gilli-
land, Ralph Moore, Ed M. Erwin and
Charles Chambers. Rev. and Mrs.
S. A. Crouch of Brownsviye, and
Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Vollers of Go-
liad, were also present.
The following girls, who were
present, spent the night in the Mc-
Afee home: Frances Henry, Shirley
Bazar, Thelma Bell, Mary Dell Fitz-
gerald and Charlotte White.
Boys present were Robert Sch-
warz, Saxon Pressley, Noel Calderia,
Anthony Caldiers, Bryson White-
and Ivan Donaldson.

Mr. Snow’s birthday anniversary
with an ennoyable dinner on Sunday
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Snow celebrated

Madeleine McAfee
Has Slumber Party
Following the football game on
Friday evening, Madeleine McAfee
was hostess to a group of boys and
girls at the home1 of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. R. R. McAfee. Tempt-
ing refreshments were served.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. A. G.
Acker was a delightful setting for a
covered1 dish supper on Saturday
evening, when the members of the
Crystal bridge Club honored their
husbands.
An autumn theme was observed.
On the serving table, which was
covered with a lovely cutwork clofh,
was an arrangement of bronze sin-
nias and orange colored tapers. In
the sun parlor were orange and yel-
low zinnias.
In the games of bridge Mrs. H. L.
Schmalzried was high for the women
and Floyd Langford was high for the
men. Fred Bernard received the
traveling prize.

Mr. and Mrs. E. Q. Farris, Mr. and

A happy meeting of the Needle-
,craft Club was held Friday after-
noon in the home of Mr®. Oscar
Mrs. Martin Bandemer and Mrs. M. Seibert. It was reported that 24.25
W. Hoppe. worth of war stamps were purchased
by the members.
Mrs. Virginia Shotwell presided
at the business session. Refresh-
ments were served late in the after-
noon. The entertaining rooms were

the Credit Bureau of McAllen on
September 1.

An outstanding event of the year,
in the Los Ebanos Study Club, was
the guest day event held Monday
afternoon at the home of Mrs. T. J.
Rippert. Assisting Mrs. Rippert a®
hostesses were Mrs. Leon Graham
and Mrs. E. H. Squires.
Mrs. Sterling Prince presided, as
president. Mrs. H. D. Rowland, pro-
gram chairman, introduced Mrs.
George B. Graf, who directed the
presentation of “The Flower
Wreath”, by Marsh. Mrs. A. P.
Crutchfield and Mr®. P. F. Baingo,
Mercedes, and Mrs. J. S. Carr, Elsa,
sang the parts and Mrs. A. E.
Branch of Elsa, was at the piano for
the presentation.

Graf told of the life of the author,

West Texas, which will include a
stay at Lubbock.

Women Meet
Monday Night
Mercedes Business and Profes-
sional Women, meeting Monday
night for their monthly session,
gathered at the El Sombrero for an
enjoyable Mexican Style dinner,
with Mrs. S. E. Tilton and Mrs. Joe
Lambertson, in charge of arrange-
ments. The dinner table was cen-
tered with colorful bird of paradise
blossoms.
Following the dinner the group
gathered at the Mercedes Library
where the business session and the
program of interest was held. Miss
