Q’s And A’s

Q - We have a kitchen sink
that gets clogged every few
weeks. Sometimes it can be
cleared with a suction cup and
sometimes with a snake. We
seldom use a chemical cleaner
I often see the advice to clean
out the plug at the bottom of
the trap under the sink. It
doesn’t seem to apply to our
sink, because it does not have
such a plug. How can the trap this. One is to fill the holes with
be cleaned? wood putty or plastic wood and
then, before the material has
dried, put the screws into place
carefully and allow to harden
Another is merely to fill the
holes with steel wool. Usually
the old screws then can be
redriven so that they hold firm
ly. Use your judgment about
which of these methods to use
and whether it might be better,
when making the repair, to
take down the door and rehang
it later.
A. — When you use a suction
cup or a snake or even a chem-
ical cleaner, what you are try-
ing to do is to remove whatever
stoppage there is in the drain-
pipe, including the trap. When
a trip has a cleanout plug, re-
moving it and dislodging the
obstruction is usually more ef-
fective than by attacking the
problem from the top of the
drain. When it does not have a
cleanout plug and you wish to
get at the stoppage from under
the sink, you must remove the
trap itself. This is a bit more
Q. - One of the doors in our
house keeps binding and stick-
ing. I remember reading some
time ago that this is often
caused by loose hinges. Sure
enough, when I inspected the
hinges, I found that both of
them were loose, but I have
forgotten how to make the re
pair. When I retighten the
screws, they come loose again
in a few days. Can you help
me?
A. - You didn’t say which of
the hinge leaves are loose --
those on the door or the jamb?
If the screws are loose on the Questions of general interest
jamb leaves, you usually can
use longer screws to tighten the ......
hinges. But if they are loose on cannot be undertaken.)
the door, you must be careful
that the screws are not so long
that they go through the door
Therefore, the best way is to
take out the screws and fill the
holes with wood putty, plastic
wood or pegs glued into place
When the repair material is
dried (it’s best to let it remain
overnight), you can reuse the
same screws or drive in new
ones of the same sire. There
are some other ways of doing
Q. - We had someone put a
concrete apron on the driveway
in front of our garage. That
difficult than removing a clea- 5
detach the two ends of the trap,
working very carefully so as
not to damage the pipe or the
trap. Whether you take off a
cleanout plug or remove a trap,
remember to place a large pan
under the trap to catch the wa-
ter that is lodged ih it.
now has aewSopeda crack
Can this be "repaired with a
concrete mix, the kind that
needs to be mixed only with
water?
A. - Yes. But be sure the
crack has stopped spreading.
Mark each end of the crack
with something that won’t be
washed off by rain. Wait a few
weeks and examine it again. If
the crack hasn’t gone beyond
the two marks, make the re-
pair. Before doing so, be sure
the crack is wide enough to get
sufficient mixture into the
opening so that it will hold.
Roughen the crack so that the
bottom is wider than the top.
