IS MOTION l*l< TI'ltKS
That the influence of motion pic |
lures is sufficient to place it In the l
plan of our national deftnse I? the
statement recently made by K. Alex-
ander Powell F. R. O. 8.
Mr. Powell has participated as a
correspondent In all the wars of re-j
cent years and it is this actual view-!
tng of the war’s ravages that en-
titles his opinions to the internation-
al hearing they always receive.
“I ha\e learned to hate war" said
Mr. Poviell ‘‘but 1 have also learned j
to respect those prepared to wage
It. Extensive propaganda has ol-i
i ways preceded armed preparation j
It will be the same in this country j
now. The thought came to me re-!
cently that in the motion pictures
there lived a way to reach all the
people and bring to them the mes-
sage of our unpreparedness.
"When 1 was invited to write
the novelizntlon of ‘The Secret of
the Submarine’’ I imediately as-
sented when t learned that the mes-
sage of preparedness would consti-
tute an important part of the story
for I realize to the fullest extent
the national influence of pictures
portraying as this one will a real-
ism of besetting dangers and the
falsity of our assumed national
safety.’’
In the picture production of “The
Secret of the Submarine” one chap-
ter of which will be shown weekly
at the Queen theater the leading
roles will be taken by Thomas Chat-
terton and Juanita Hansen.
Through the co-operation of the
officers at the government naval base
at San Pedro some wonderfully
realistic effects have been obtained
the mysterious undersea craft being
brought right up to the gaze of the
audience and made to go through
the death-dealing stunts for which
they are constructed.
The Queen is also showing today
a Lubin two-act drama “The Can-
dle” With a star cast and a Vita-
i graph comedy featuring Mary An-
i derson and Webster Campbell in
“Some Chicken” and Essanay pre-
sents (Thomas Cominerford in “The
Fable of tlie Preacher Who Flew
1 fis Kite But not Because He Wish-
ed to Dp So.
Friday Charlie Chaplin will be at
the Queen in one of Essanay.'s great
comedy features “Police.”
"MV LADY'S SLIPPER"
AT DIXIE THEATER TODAY
Miss Anita Stewart and Mr. Earle
Williams are featured in the five-
part Vitagraph Blue Ribbon feature.
Lady’s Slipper” being shown
at the Oixie theater today. The
story tells of Francis Bunham an
American naval oiflcer who escapes
from a British convict ship and it-
on his way to Paris to see his coun-
try’s minister. While walking just
outside the city limits he rescues a
'beautiful girl from highwaymen it
f was a case of love at first sight.
(While waiting for the minister. Bun-
I ham gives way to his restless na-
! ture and makes a round of the gam-
bling houses. He loses all he has
and further becomes indebted to a
stranger. The next morning the
stranger calls on Bunham and
frightens h'm by showing notes
signed by the American t.he night
before. The stranger who finally
introduces himself as the .Marquis
du Tremigon laughs away Bunkum s
fear: and tells hinMie can wipe out
all of his obligations by procuring
some article of wearing apparel of
the Countess Vlllars. with whom he (
