NOW, THEREFORE,when Pearl Harbor was attacked, a group of women was
volunteering to go to England and ferry planes; and
at their head was Jacqueline Cochran, the most famous woman
pilot of the twentieth century; and
under the direction of Nancy Love, these women soon
qualified as members of the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying
Squadron (WAFS), which ultimately became the Women Air
Force Service Pilots (WASPs) with Ms. Cochrane directing all
WASPs and Mrs. Love serving as Executive for WASP in the
Air Transport Command; and
official recognition was not given the WASPs until 1979 when
the Air Force accepted them as part of itself; and
in 1984, each member of the Women Air Force Service Pilots
was awarded the Victory medal, and those who served on duty
for more than a year also received the American Theatre
medal.
I Joseph P. Riley, Jr., Mayor, do hereby proclaim Saturday,

WOMEN AIR FORCE SERVICE PILOTS (W.A.S.P.) DAY
in the City of Charleston, South Carolina, in recognition of
their valiant service to our country.
