Male Attire.
I {road Scott a young man well
known in this city and parish
and well connected. and his wife
arc in the parish jaii. hold at the
request of Sheriff Stallcup. of
Marion County Texas who I
wants them upon charges of
bootlegging.
The sheriff arrived yesterday
with a warrant for them after
having previously had them
arrested at Mooringsport this
parish and jailed here.
Scott refused to return with-j
out requisation papers and thei
sheriff was forced to return to
Texas. J
Bootlegging in Texas being a
felong is subject to requisation
and it is said the sheriff will
make the application for the
necessary papers.
It is alleged Scott and his
wife had a trunk and that his
wife wore male attire.
They were in the vicinity of
the lakes and passed alternative- I
ly in and out of the Louisana-
Texas State line. They claim
they were hunting for pearls
and Mrs. Scott wore overalls
while engaged in this work.
Shreveport Times.
Sheriff Stallcup went to Allies'

rested at Mooringsport and ta-
ken to Shreveport. When arres-

woman in male attire. The
party came to Ames' Springs
with a big trunk and stated that
they were hunting pearls. Slier

Resolutions of Respect.
Resolutions adopted by the
Missionary Society of the Pres-
byterian church of Jefferson
Texas:
It lias pleased God to trans-
late Mrs. J. 0. Preston to that
better land where there is no
pain; anil this society deeply
feels her loss. Her beautiful
life taught us many lessons
which we shall never forget.
For many many years she was
confined to her chair yet she
never lost interest in church
work she thus taught us to be
faithful to our church duties.
From childhood nothing inter-
fered with her daily reading her
Bible and communing with God
in prayer she thus taught us
devotion to God. She did not
criticise other people she shared
her means with the needy she
thus taught us charity in its
broadest meaning. She rever
eneed the Sabbath never even
writing letters on that day
thus she taught us to hallow
God's holy day. She apprecia-
ted all that others did for her
she thus taught us gratitude.
She loved (lowers and music
and books and people she
taught us to be spiritually mind
ed. In fifteen years of intense
suffering she never murmured
nor talked to others of her ills
except to answer a direct ques
tion she taught us patience.
Always she was leaching us con
tontineut cheerfulness unsel-
fishness tnul love. Her memory
is a star loading us to find whoro
our Savior abides.
Whereas her life has been so
great a blessing to us; be it re-
solved :
1st That we enter on the min-
utes of our society this ex pros
sion of our appreciation.
2nd That we give to her fami
ly a copy of these resolutions.
3rd That we publish these
resolutions in our town paper and
in The Presbyterian Advance.

Brooms Manufactured at Jefferson.
Not everybody knows that as
nice and well made brooms as
are turned out from any place
are made right here in Jefferson
by F. B. Sehweers at the home
of his father C. A. Sehweers in
llowelton the north suburbs of
Jefferson. Prank B. Sehweers
learned this trade in the school
for the blind at Austin and lie
has followed this work since that
time. The brooms are made
from broom corn raised in Ma-
rion county. They are not made
for the wholesale trade but are
made and sold to the local buy
ers exclusively. These brooms
are well made and of three
grades; a light broom for -Tie a
better grade for i!.">c and a heavy
grade for oftice and store use
for TtOe. All who want good
brooms should patronize this
home industry and give their or
ders to F. it. Sehweers.
Iron Spans For Moseley Bridge.
Moseley's Bridge on Black
Cypress which has had a middle
iron span for some time is now
having iron spans put in to
reach from bank to bank. This
is a good move by the Court and
will give a fine crossing on Black
Cypress for the Bend country
and oil field district. The Court
ois putting in good bridges and
making good roads over Marion
county as fast as possible.
Nagro Peppered With Bird Shot.
A shooting took place near
Comet last Friday night on at'
count of one negro stealing
watermelons and another tilling
on him. Joe Walker the accused
party attacked Si Hayles who
had charged him with the theft
knocking him clown cursing
him and then reached for his
pocket as if he was going to
shoot when Hayles who had u
shot gun tired at Walker hitting
him in the hack with a load of
bird shot some two hundred or
more. The Hayles boy is held
justifiable and his examining
trial held Wednesday before Jus
tice Todd and bond placed at
$300
Dr. O'Rear went out to see
Walker and found that lie was
hit by over two hundred bird
shot in the body.

Trash Piles.
In last week's .Timplecute our
worthy city marshal had a |>ul>
lication calling attention to a
city ordinance against putting
any kind of trash oil the streets.
This means sidewalks also. It
is his duty to line all who violate
this ordinance.
There is a mistaken imprcs
sion that it is the business of
the Civic League to remove all
trash piles from the streets and
sidewalks. The few ladies who
work in the Civic League have
not imposed that task upon
themselves. The city has un
dertaken it. Let's you and I
not be among those who have
tines to pay. When the marshal
starts around to see who are to
be fined I guess the city will get
money enough t*> keep the streets
clean. Scraps of paper too
mean trash. Observer.
Notice.
I as city Marshall hereby give
notice that there is a:i Ordinance
in force against riding bicycles
on sidewalks and from and after
tin- liate will enforce said law.
