CHECK LABELS
ON SPRING FABRICS
Have you ever bought a lovely
garment or piece of fabric that
looked “sad” after the first
laundering?
Much of the success or fail-
ure in laundering synthetics fi-
bers lies in following directions
given by manufacturers. Read
your label carefully before buy-
ing if you want to be sure you
can launder the fabric at home.
Follow directions given. Your
label may say something like
this:
•"Handwash.” Specific direc-
tions may be given. In this
case, the fabric cannot be
handled carelessly or washed
in a tub with strong soap and
very hot water.
• “Wash at home or in com-
mercial laundry with * careful
methods.”
• “Can be washed in com-
mercial laundry with ordinary
methods."
• “Color fast.” Homemakers
should be able to wash this with
regular laundry if she is sure
of the reputation of her dealer
and manufacturer.
Labels should tell you what
the fabric is, how to handle it,
and what you can expect from
it in the way of service. Look
for a good descriptive label
when you b

SMALL BUSINESS
By C. WILSON H A R 0,E fl
An Issue is before this session
ot Congress that affects the
welfare of every business, on
every job. But because real is-
sue will probably be obscured
by so much political propagan-
da. it Is perhaps well to discuss
bare, brutal!
facts.
* » •
The Issue is
briefly this.
While the
United States
government,
with a debt
of almost
ISM billion,
has long been
In debt to Its c. W. Harder
own rltlsens, now for perhaps
first time in this century, 1). 8.
is a debtor nation.
* o •
In the last two year*, due to
almost unrestricted foreign im-
ports into, this country and to
tariff barriers against U. S.
goods existing in foreign na-
tions, the U. S. has a $7.4 bil-
lion trade deficit.
„ ooo
Not s small part of this situ-
ation has been created by about
179 billiun flung around the
world In all kinds of so-called
foreign aid schemes.
Without commenting on the
soundness or unsoundness of
this position at that time, it
is significant that there is a
great difference when a gov-
ernment owes its own peo-
ple, and when it owes foreign-
ers. For one thing, citizens must
abide by whatever fiduciary
finagling is dreamed up.
But foreign central banking
ayatema have decided they
would rather have American
gold than American dollars,
with thr result that l>.e V. H.
gold stocks have bern depleted
by almost billion by Ihese
foreign banka exchanging dol-
lars for the yellow metal.
• • •
But it it illegal for nny Amer-
ican citizen to have any gold
reserve.
o*o
The problem Is complex.
Some government economists
feel that the easiest way to
handle the situation Is to in-
crease taxes.
Then there are some who feci
solution Is to stop foreign aid.
reduce government spending
and employment, and also pro-
tect American business and la-
bor from the predatory attacks
made by dumping onto U. S.
shores of goods made with
cheap foreign labor.
* * * •
This latter greop may or may
n*t turn out to be a voice cry-
ing out In the wilderneoa. It la
quite b»trresting. If not Ironic,
that Japan, a recipient of large
rams of the foreign give away
schemes, has sst ssdy turned
in a lot af dollars far V. 8. gold,
but is still rmbarrasaad by a
surplus of American dollars. It
Is perhaps lUtlng to observe
that no one boors anything
more shoot that song rushed
out right after Pearl Harbor by
Tin Pan Alley which was Utlcd
"Yee’re a Bap. Mr. Jap.”
