There were 210 cars of cattle passed over
the Katv Sunday for the Territory
Ma Sam Hunt the Katys agent here re-
ports they have averaged a hundred cars
daily since the 1st
In Sundays Gazettc appeared an error
in quoting Mr William Powell of the lirm
of Hhome Powell The tjpe made him
say he had SOOOthoroughbied Herefords
pasturing when it should have been 300
The new addition on the west side of the

Germany has definitely resolved to with-

Iowa Cattle butter for Food
Siotx CiTr Iowa April 0 There is al-
most total destitution among farmers in
this region of feed for livestock and cattle
are suflering extremely There arj re-
ports of actual starvation in several locali-
ties Hay is il5 to iiO per ton and some
farmers have almost given away their herds
to save them from starvation
Cotton Seed the Premium Cattle Feed
In this age of progress corn has got to
drop behind It is no longer the premium
feed for fattening cattle and hereafter will
not be in so great demand as in the past
Only the last winter has it been freely
demonstrated that cotton seed and cotton
seed meal is a feed superior to anj other It
has the double advantage over corn which
has hitherto been recognized as the banner
feed of being better and cattle fed on it
weigh more and make better beef than
when corn is the ration The annuals lav
on flesh more rapidly and the meat is said
to be sweeter and to possess a richer flavor
This will be new s to many of our stockmen
During the past six months over four
thousand head of cattle were fed at tho cotton-seed
oil mills in Little Kock Ark for
tho St Louis and Chicago markets A
bunch was fed for 120 days at atimeand the
cattle gained two and a half pounds a day
each during the period The management
of the oil mills knowing tho value of the
feed now propose to feed cattle eery sea-
son This is only one of a number of in-
stances that could be cited The result has
shown that cattle can bo prepared for mar-
ket far cheaper and better than by feeding
corn and the day is not far distant when
tie Western states w ill have to find some
other disposition of their corn crop than
for feediug cattle Alfalfa and cotton seed
make a ration that has iio superior and as
soon as this is generally known and appre
ciated there will be far less numbers of
feeders sent beyond the borders of Colorado
to be put In shape for market Field and
Farm
A SURE THING
Stock Investments ou the Free and Unin
closed Range Plan
It is useless to talk about making a sure
thing out of an investment in stock when
worked on the range plan unless the range
be practically free and uninclosed Where
stock have millions of acres of grass to
roam over at unmolested will and aro tam-
pered with and jaded about only at round up
timo and for branding aud gathering beeves
the amount of rough and long winter
weather that they can stand is indeed sur-
prising and upon this sort of handling
alone can there be counted a sure thing
in the range business But tho day for this
sort of handling cattle in this country is
passed Too many men have sought to en-
gage in the lucrative business and as a
natural consequence the whole country Imss
been cut up into pastures some large and
some small and too often do we find them
oyerstocked and an inadequato water
supply Cattle hemmed in such pastures
fare reasonably well through ordinary
winter weather but with the return of sueir
a winter as was witnessed six and seven
j ears ago our country would present a de
plorablo spectacle indeed Many men
would go out of tho stock business in a much
less time than they found their way in
xad carcasses could be seen from one end
to tm other of these fence lines and the re-
sult would be ruinous to many of our stock-
men The remedy that wdl prevent these
losses should a hard winter strike us is one
with which it will prove hard to cope The
small stockman with his bunch of from 100
to BOO head can protect himself
bv growing feed for winter use
but where from 1000 to 20000
are to be cared for the feed problem may be
considered entirely out of the question
Bunches of this size must do their own
rustling and great care should be taken to
not overstock their range As the situa-
tion now standswe deem it practicable for
every stock farmer to grow all the feed that
maybe needed to take his stock through
the winter The new pastures have cut
down his supply of range for both winter
and summer but a roueh winter need not
result in loss to him if he will only prepare
for it There is no such thing as tho big
cow man freezing him out If he will pre-
pare feed stay with his bunch and look
well to their caro he will be in the country
and in a prosperous state of affairs long
after the hard winters have done the work
to freeze tho big man out Panhandle In-
terstate
Range Gossip Hern and There
R W Bell of Flagstaff A T recently

At Cheyenne to day the Wyoming cattle
growers association will hold its regular
annual meeting
The Bennett brothers of Fort Collins went

Keep your cows in good humor It is
said that a cross or worried cow gives milk
lacking in rickness and a loss amount
then when she is in a serene f ramo of mind
Any kind of strong soap will be found efll
acious in destroying fleas lice etc on ani-
mals when they are washed with strong
soapsuds which operation nowevershould
be done on a warm day or in a warm room
From tho latest reports a heavy cattle
loss can now be looked for throughout
Western Colorado Naturally the worst is
expected so soon after the last two storms
and the reality will not be as bad as many
stockmen now fear The lesson however
Is made more pronounced that the only
proper way is to run good grade cattle
rather than twice tho number of poorer
animals and have sufficient feed for them
Tho big cattlemen have leased all tho
small reservations in the cast end of the
Cherokee outlet and for the past ten days
train load after train load of cattle have
been unloaded thero They already have
moro than be pastured on tho leased land
and their evident intention is to let them
drift over into the outlet thus defeating
the wishes of the secretary of tho interior
Western cattle sent from Chicago are now
being sold in Switzerland Last week ISO
were sold and they gave the most perfect
satisfaction Zurich tool thirty Basle
Berne and St Galle each twenty and Win
terthur and Brug each ten head and the
beef was pronounced to be excellent in
quality It was sold off at the usual selling
price about 17 cents per pound and proved
inadequate to the demand w hich had been
created by the news of the exieriment be-
ing made
It is said that Chicago packers have sold
pork on contract that must bo made this
month and are afraid to show how badly
they want the hoss One pork packer sug-
gests that Armour is in that fix and seeing
tne hopelessness of buying hogs to fill con-
tracts he stopped buying hogs and turned
to hammering the pork market and is
quietly bujiug the product as fast as the
weak kneed holders are shaken out Mr
Armour is a great man and like tho great
showman Barnum he can fool tho people
when they know ho is doing it
As soon as the flock begins to drop lambs
start a lamb flock Add to it every daj as
the lambs come until you have about fifty
ewes and fifty lambs in this flock then
start another By the time jou have
gotten t o of these filled out and are ready
to stai t a third jou can throw number one
and two together Then number thiee and
four can be thrown together In this wa
jou can keep the new lambs separated from
the older ones until they know their
mothers and aie stiong enough to go with
the older ones This will be in a few days
as they get their legs astonishingly quick
when they get plenty of good rich milk
It should evident to every dairyman that
constitutional vigor is one of tho most es-
sential things in a dairy cow It does not
follow that dairy cows should be coarse in
structure often the most finely organized
are the most vigorous but dairymen should
always avoid delicate cows and deli-
cate calves Cahes that aro difficult to
rear should neverj be reared The first
thing that should be considered in selecting
a cow or in choosing a breed is vicor of
constitution Whenever a breeder discov-
ers that his calves are lacking in vigor ho
should change his course of breeding
whatever may bo the reputation of the
strain that he has been producing Nothing
in a dairy cow can compensate for the lack
of vigor
The sheep business is taking n boom in
this state that it never before witnessed
The mutton sheep seems to bo tho f avoi itej
uuioug liiu larmers uiiu uiu uesire is to
keep a few good rather than a large lot of
poor ones Thero is one dunger attending
this great demand for sheep by farmers
who aro comparatively ignorant as to the
selection and care of sheep which is cal-
culated to do an almost irreparable damage
to tho industry and that is the introduction
of scab The sheep that aro brought to
this state como from every point attainable
and arc shipped in cars w hich possibly
have carried scabby sheep vithout having
been previously disinfected This is the
only danger to be feared in the introduction
of so many foreign sheep into the state
There is profit in the mutton sheep tariff
or no tariff and thero is plenty of room for
more
