The water supply of the last appears much
stronger than the others It spouts from

Arrangements nro now being made to
erect a block of four stono business houses
on Main street in Childress this spring
The painters have commenced work on
tho new courthouse at Childress
Tilinan King and J H Mundy have or-
dered a steam thresher and will be prepared
to do threrhing for Childress county farm-

Tho new hotel being erected at Santo
Palo Pinto county when completed will bo
an ornament to the town It is being
erected by Mr W II Hayden from Mason
county who has recently settled in that
town
Carson County Chronicle The grand
Jury adjourned Thursday After four days
search they found nothing criminal in Car-
son county A pretty good showing for a
new county to have a record like this
There never has been a person convicted of
a crime in this county where the crime
charged was a penitentiary offense
There are a number of new dwellings
nearing completion at Archer City and the
Progress of that place hopes the moneyed
men will continue to build houses until tho
demand U supplied
Work on tho artesian well at Bellvillo
Kerr county has been abandoned after hav-
ing reached a depth of 1500 feet at an ex-
pense of 13000 It is not probable tho
proprietor will make any further effort to
secure artesian water
Digging still progresses in a most satis
factoiy manner at the Sherman artesian
welL yet the kind of soil brought to
the surface is unchanged
A hose company has been organized in
connection with the Wiess hook and ladder
company at Beaumont and the officers are

ered an outcropping of coal on that place
which he intends to develope The vein at
the surface is only four inches thick but
increases as it gets further into the bank
Mr Ramsdale says tho coal burns fiercely
in the stove and has promised to bring in
some to try in tho forge
The total quantity of coal of all grades
mined in Texas during tho yesr ISM was
12S216 ton3 valued at 340017 at the mines
Laredo Times Laredo can Justly claim
that her Santo Thomas coal mines have a
larger annual output of coal than the com-
bined output of all the other coal mines in
Texas
San Saba News There are some indica-
tions that parties unknown have been
searching for hidden treasures on Simpson
creek not far from the residence of Mr
Colburn Some two excavations have been
made and considerable dirt has been thrown
out but it is not known whether tho treas-
ure was found or cot The work is sup-
posed to have been done at night and is
surrounded with mystery
La Geixgc April 27 There is great in-
terest felt here in tho discovery of lignite
in a vein about twenty feet thick some two
miles west of this place It is said to be of
lino quality and a test of its coking quali-
ties is to be made soon

A stock company will bo incorporated at
Galveston by Chicago capitalists to estab-
lish a new town near that city for the pur-
pose of inaugurating manufacturing enter-
prises
Parties at San Angolo have purchased
the franchise of tho Sherwood canning fac-
tory and will operate the same
Another largo mil and gin is to be re-
moved to Cuero from Meyersvillo by
Messrs Houston It has a capacity of
forty five bales per day
The Luling ice factory is idle The ma-
chine was too small to manufacture ice in
competion with the breweries and the
proprietor abandoned it
Runge Karnes county will soon have an
extensive brick making plant The ma-
terial is similar to tho Calaveras brick
clay
The Wichita roller mills company an-
nounces that they will be compelled to shut
down their mill the forepart of May in
order to prepare to handle their share of
the great wheat crop of IsOl
Hallottsville is to have an oil mill -Mr
E C Baumgarten and other Schulenburg
parties take 810000 of the stock and the
citizens of Hallettsvillo the remainder

A company was organized at Tyler last
week to establish a trunk and coHln fac-
tory at that place The stock was all taken
onicors eleeted and a charter applied for
Mr E C Crowthor the efficient superin
tendent of Furnace Jefferson has re-
turned from an extended trip in tho inter-
est of tho Lone Star iron company Super-
intendent Crowther heard many Mattering
encomiums passed uponthesuperiorquality
of pig iron he is turning out from the rich
ore mines of Marion county during his ab-
sence in the leading iron districts of tho
country
Alvarado Bulletin Tho most unpleasant
news the Bulletin has to tell its readers is
that the directors of the canning factory
held a meeting Wednesday afternoon and
decided that the plan upon which the com-
pany had been organized was not a practic-
able one and so disbanded It is to bo
hoped however that the idea of building a
canning factory will not be altogether
abandoned

sou of W H Garrett of this city exhib-
ited in our office a specimen of coal taken
from a shaft sunk four miles east of
Emory Rains county which has the ap-
pearance of being a good article of coal
Mr Garrett savs they passed through three
strata of it Tho first is twenty ouo feet
from the surface and is throe and a half
feet thick the second is thirty eight feet
from the surface and seven and a half feet
thick tho third stratum is fifty four feet
from the surface and is six feet thick tho
last is the best quality Underneath this
third stratum they found a bed of clay
v ell suited for the making of fire proof
brick fourteen feet thick
Crockett is to have a knitting mill The
machinery has been ordered and an ex-
perienced man will bo in charge of the
business
Archer County Progress Archer county
raises an abundant amount of wheat and
tho citizens have to ship it away to have it
ground and then pay freight on it back
again consequently they ray freight on it
both ways which takes a noat sum of
money and wo could save that by talking
for a good flouring mill
Gainesville Herald The Alliance mill
here is worth at least 30000 Mr Paul
CcAilter is endeavoriug to organizo a Joint
stock company to pay this indebtedness and
own and operate the mill Twenty thou-
sand dollars capital is all that is needed Of
this Mr Coulter and others have secured
subscribers to about 11000 stock Mr
Coulter thinks tho directors can get up
S iOOO more stock in the county leaving a
balance of S5000 This tho people ot Green-
ville should take forming an allianco with
the farmers of the county that would be
mutually profitable The mill is certainly
a bargain at 20000 and under management
such as the present could certainly be
made to yield a handsome uiviaena
There has been some talk of organizing a
75000 stock company and building a cotton
seed oil mill at Whitewright There has
not been any material development yet

that the Bowie mill is to be resurrected and
put upon a solid financial footing through
