A permanent inter-church w<
men’s committee has been formed in
Elkton, Mr., as a result of the work
done by Miss Lena York, worker in
defense and war industry areas un-
der the Methodist Woman’s Society
of Christian Service. This committee
has assisted in securing interested
parents to help with vacation school
programs (held under Miss York’s
leadership for a six-week period),
which were commended by the com-
munity housing manager. Church
groups are sponsoring the collection
of books for a library which is great-
ly needed in the area. They are plan-
ning additional old-fashioned church
socials in the recreation hall of the
housing project, the one already held
having proved successful. The w
men have also had full cooperation
and clearance with U.S.O. staff and
personnel, public health nurses, and
housing project service advisers.

More Indian women must be
trained as nurses and public-health
nursing must be developed as a field
for the service of Indian women, ac-
cording to Bishop J. Waskom Pick-
ett, of Bombay. Two-thirds of the
nurses in some areas of India are
now the product of Christian homes,
schools and churches, he says. The
need for nurses has increased, and
the value of the profession is being
realized more than ever before. He
urges a better training for nursing
service. “The war has increased In-
dia’s needs enormously,” says Bishop
Pickett. “It caused a terrible famine
in two provinces and an acute food
shortage everywhere in India last
year. A new emphasis upon medical
work, both curative and preventive,
is essential."
