Renteria awarded GBRA scholarship
The Guadalupe-Bianco River
Authority (GBRA) Scholarship
Program, which is part of the
GBRA Employee Volunteer
Program, awarded scholarships
to area students from GBRA’s
ten county district. GBRA gen-
eral manager W. E. "Bill" West
Jr. and Board chairman John P.
Schneider Jr. presented the
scholarships at the Board of
Directors regular meeting in
Seguin on Wednesday, May 18.
Crista! Renteria, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Renteria
■ Sr., was one of the seven recipi-
ents chosen to receive a $2,000
scholarship.
Renteria, a 2005 Cuero High
School graduate, was involved in
CHS Concert/Marching Band,
the Anchor Club, National
Honor Society, Student Council,
Distributive Education Clubs of
America, Peer Assistant Leader
Skills, Drill Team, and UIL
Spanish 1 & 2.
Renteria also performed many
community service hours includ-
ing Relay for Life, Vacation Bible
School, U-Turn Ministries,
Brain-Minder related projects,
Wild Flower Bike Ride, the City
of Cuero "Christmas in the Park"
and Halloween Haunted House,
Adopt-a-family donations at
Thanksgiving and Christmas
and assisted with nursing home
bingo.
Renteria plans to attend
Texas A&M University at
Corpus Christi where she will
major in Biomedical Sciences.
Renteria’s long-term goal is to
attend Baylor Dental School and
become an orthodontist.
The GBRA Employee
Volunteer Program was founded
in December of 2000 and is led
by a committee with a chairper-
son responsible for the overall
program. Its purpose is to
improve the quality of life in
area communities through the
commitment of GBRA employees
and the use of their time, energy,
talents and skills. Employee vol-
unteerism is strictly voluntary,
unpaid work performed by
employees for non-profit or gov-
ernment organizations engaged
in civic, health, education, social
services and other charitable
pursuits.

to Education scholarship
Five
area
students were
among 125 high school seniors
awarded Salute to Education
scholarships on May 5 at the
Victoria College’s Fine Arts
Auditorium.
Selected out of 400 area high
School seniors, Sarah Arndt,
Sarah Moore, JoLeah Stiles, and
jKarl Taylor from Cuero High
School and Shalaine Smith from
Yorktown High School will each
receive a $500 scholarship,

In addition to the award pro-
vided by Victoria-area Ford and
Lincoln Mercury dealers, includ-
ing Cuero’s own Weber Motor
Co., students will have an oppor-
tunity to increase the value of
the Salute to Education scholar-
ship through matching scholar-
ships offered by The Victoria
College and The University of
Houston-Victoria.
Salute to Education was
established in San Antonio in
1992 by local Ford and Lincoln
Mercury dealers who saw a need
to support education in their
community. The program is now
in 10 communities through
Texas, California, and Florida.

recognized for the “Dean’s List.”
