THE REFUGIO TIMELY REMARKS—LOW'S THEATER OPENING EDITION
Page Three
Low’s Theater Acoustics Perfect;
Interior Lined with Sound Wood
❖
The Manager
.
EUGENE LOW, JR.
Mr. Low has been connected
with the show business, in one
way or another, most of his life.
As a singing comedian he was
for many years on the vaudeville
stage. He also played with stock
companies for a number of years,
most of the time as head of his
own troup.
Now Gene has his own theater,
and in it he has endeavored to
embody all the beautiful and con-
venient features gleaned from
other show houses in his years of
experience.

Low’s Sound Is the Best
By selecting the RCA Economy
sound system to reproduce the best
in talking pictures in the new Low’s
Theater, Eugene Low, Jr., has chosen
sound equipment that has already
been accorded superlative recognition
through its selection by a large ma-
joirty of the motion picture produc-
ers and the wired houses in America.
Several producers of talking motion
pictures, comprising the leading
makes of films in the industry and
more than 2,000 theaters in America,
have selected this equipment as the
best to record and reproduce talking
pictures.
More than 2,000 theaters have also
attested to the superiority of this re-
producing system by having it in-
stalled.
“I am satisfied, after a thorough
investigation,” Eugene Low, Jr., of
the new Low’s Theater declared,
‘‘that in selecting this equipment we
shall be giving our patrons the best
possible reproduction of sound effect
and dialogue that it is possible to
obtain. We have gone to considerable
expense, both in making our investi-
gation and installing the equipment,
and feel certain that in securing it
we are giving our patrons a quality
of entertainment that will be on a
par with anything they could obtain
in any theater, regardless of the size
of the city in which it is located or
the reputation of the house.”
One of the greatest problems con-
fronting theater architects and engi-
neers since the advent of sound is the
accoustical treatment of the theater.
Since it is almost impossible to prop-
erly reproduce talking pictures with-
out accoustics, special treatment is
given theaters before the sound in-
stallation is made.
The new Low’s Theater has been
treated until it is almost accouns-
tically perfect. The entire building is
lined with Sound Wood, a recently
perfected material for softening and
retaining sound; drapes and curtains
have been carefully inspected by
‘‘sound experts,” in order that every
possible precaution may be taken to
give this new theater perfect repro-
duction.
Many little drapes and curtains
have been hung to improve sound ef-
fects, these drapes drawing little at-
tention to the casual inspector. Sound
waves from the talkies striking these
soft drapes and curtains are in turn
softened and thereby improved.
Sound must do one of three things
when it is liberated. It must either
be transmitted, reverberated or ab-
sorbed. In the accoustical treatment
of Low’s the Sound Wood ceilings and
side walls and draperies produce ab-
sorption, while the purpose of the
RCA Economy system engineers, who
installed the sound system, is to
transmit the sound waves to every
comer in the entire building, equal-
izing the volume received in each
place. This requires much time to do
and many delicate adjustments are
necessary to reproducing system be-
fore the correct volume has been se-
cured.
As many people gather in the thea-
ter, more volume is necessary to the
house with the sound rays. Each piece
of clothing has certain absorption
qualities and the same volume in an
empty house would hardly be heard
in a theater filled to capacity. For
the purpose of determining just how
much this setting of volume should
be changed, a “sound checker” will
be on duty at Low’s at all times. His
duty is to make periodic checks of
the volume and when necessary either
raise or lower it as much as required
by signalling the operator, where the
controls are mounted.
Low’s has been erected for the
proper presentation of talking pic-
tures, and one of the acoustically per-
fect theaters in this section.
Made Arbuckle a Star
When “The County Chairman,” by
George Ade, was produced at Wal-
laces Theater on Broadway more
than 30 years ago, Maclyn Arbuckle
became an important star because of
his performance in the title role. Now,
in its 1935 version, it serves as a
vehicle for Will Rogers, who is said
to give one of his finest screen per-
formances in the Fox Film produc-
tion of the play at the new Low’s
Theater, June 16 and 17.
