BIGGEST SCHOOL FOR NURSE§.
The Philadelphia School for
Nurses is said to be the largest of
the kind in the world. In the last
year nearly 11,600 patients were
supplied with nurses. Fully four-
fifths of this service is said to have
been gratuitous. At present a large
number of two-year scholarships are
available to young women through-
out the country, the preference being
given to applicants from small towns
and rural districts. These scholar-
ships include room, board, laundry
work, uniforms, all necessary in-
struction and railroad fare paid to
the student’s home town on the com-
pletion of the course.
SENATE CLERK FORMER ACTOR.
John C. Crockett, the reading
clerk of the United States senate,
was formerly an actor and his read-
ing of the bills is accomplished With
great dramatic force and enthusi-
asm. He was clerk of the supreme
court of Iowa, but resigned his posi-
tion to go to Washington when he
was notified of his choice by the sen-
ate committee. His voice and enun-
ciation are unusually clear, and
when it rises and falls with oratori-
cal emphasis, it soothes many a
member of the senate through the
weary grind of bill reading.

Allen & Faulkner.
Lots of other people, says St
Nicholas, would like to know whai
makes electricity, but nobody doei
know it. We know a good man)
things about electricity, just as we
know a good many things about life
But we do not know what makes the
difference between a dead tree and £
live tree, although we know the dif-
ference perfectly. Just so we knov
that it is dangerous to touch whai
we call a 'dive wire,” because elec-
tricity is passing through it, but wc
do not know what electricity is. Wc
know how to make electricity dc
wonderful tilings for us, but we dc
not know what "'makes electricity.

vember 17, 1666, and which has ex-
isted almost continuously since the
first number was printed on Janu
ary 1, 1667. The oldest copy pre
served is No. 69, of September 8,

“HEAPING OSSA UPON PELION.”
Pelion and Ossa are the names of
mountains in the eastern part of
Thessaly, Greece. Brewer, in hia
Dictionary of Phrase and Fable,
gives the quotation as “Heaping
Ossa upon Pelion,” not “Piling Pe-
lion on Ossa,” as you have it. The
phrase means to add difficulty to dif-
ficulty, embarrassment to embarrass-
ment, etc. When the giants tried to
scale heaven, hey placed Mount
0?sn unt Pelion for a scal-
ing !
