Pastor Tells
Guild Of
Service
Pastor John Herzog oflm-
manuel church was guest
speaker at the regular meet-
ing of the Mary Martha Guild
August 3.
Pastor Herzog gave the
group a report on the Chap-
lain’s Corps of the Armed
Forces, of which he is a
member in the Army Re-
serve.
This year, the Corps is
celebrating its 191st anni-
versary. The group origi-
nated in 1775 on a volun-
teer basis. It has been a
part of the regular Armed
Forces since World War I.
Pastor Herzog said that
the regard and respect the
Chaplains now receive is a
far cry from conditions dur-
ing World War II when many
of the Chaplains were not
qualified as they should have
been.
He said that Chaplains
served all of the men in an
organization. Their duties
involve welfare work and
holding worship services,
but counseling is the most
predominant duty. Bringing
God to men and men to God
is the purpose of the Chap-
lains, Pastor Herzog said.
This year, the Mercedes
pastor served two weeks of
active duty at Fort Polk, La.
Marty Albright, who the
Mary Martha members
sponsored to Camp Lone
Star, a Walther League camp
in Orange, Texas, presented
a report on his activities.
Four Walther Leaguers from
Mercedes attended the five-
day camp. Marty expressed
his appreciation to the group
for their sponsorship and
hoped that they would be able
to send someone else again
next year.
The regular business
meeting was then called to
order with 10 members pre-
sent: Mrs. Margie Loomans,
Mrs. Ida Schupp, Mrs. Ver-
na Albirght, Mrs. Loretta
Eilers, Mrs. Helma Hawk,
Mrs. Sally Erchinger, Mrs.
Mildred Twenhafel, Mrs.
Violet Treasurer, Mrs. Vel-
ma Karle, and Mrs. Edna
Mixon. Two guests were
Mrs. Ida Mae Klein, and
Mrs. Herzog.
