A V IT M TO
NORTH TEXAS STAR STORYTELLER & RAMBLER O 33
TALES, from page 32
his daughter's husbands are capitalized. In
the also category, do not capitalize the sur-
names.
Another important thing is to narrow
down the time frame. Don’t look for all the
Lynches who ever lived. Look for the ones
who lived between 1700 and 1750!
If you don't know exact dates, write abt
(about), ca (circa), bef (before), to make the
query a specific as possible.
When you are posting a query, be certain
that you have included information on how
you want to be contacted. If you don't tell
people how to contact you, you might as
well not post the query. List your postal
address as well as an email address’
Remember not everyone has e-mail and
you may miss that one important clue
because the person who would respond
does not have your postal address.
There are quite a few query sites on the
Internet. The two best are
Rootsweb/Ancestry: http://boards.ances-
try.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw and
Genealogy.com: http://genforum.com/.
Both of these sites have many, many mes-
sage boards that include both surname
boards and location boards which become
as specific as counties, and in some cases,
cities.
Another online query site is Cousin
Connect at
http:/ /www.cousinconnect.com/. There
are some magazines that also include
genealogy query sites. The best one is
Yankee Magazine which has a Web site at
http: / / www.yankeemagazine.com/index.p
hp and can also be found on newsstands.
Finally, evaluate and rewrite for clarity if
necessary.
Do not use all upper case/capital letters.
Your surnames are the most important and
capitals emphasize that. Also, using all caps
on the Internet tells people you are scream-
ing at them. You don't need to scream.
Never use all lower case letters.
Check your spelling and grammar. Never
send a query, or letter of any sort, that is
ungrammatical and contains misspelling.
Use the dictionary. Look the words up.
Revert to your high school grammar class
and don't send queries that don't make
sense. Punctuate correctly.
Genealogical queries can yield wonderful
results if they are written to gain the atten-
tion of potential relations. Taking a little
time and care in writing either an electronic
query or one for a magazine will give your
request a better chance for gaining some-
one's attention rather than ending up in the
email trash can or in the circular file on the
floor.
Now here is a query about Johnson
