Pattlson Is not only taking great Inter-
est In the Democratic campaign In
Pennsylvania but In the farreaching
political battle In New York Al-
though the governors friends In this
state were strong adherents of Cleve-
land In the Chicago convention and
contributed largely to his nomination
he earnestly deBlrcs the success of Hill
In New York and hopes the president
will soon mako public a declaration In
his favor
He sa > s Hill deserves the active
support of Cleveland In view of the
sacrifice he has made In accept tiff the
nomination for governor and the politi-
cal significance of the campaign In
New York He said he had learned
from a perfectly reliable source that
Senator Hill had done All In his power
to dlssaude Maynard from being a

was Inevitable If his name vaa placed

Waco Tex Oct 14 Much Interest
Is being felt Jn the outcome of the rte
publican congressional convention
which meets here next Tuesday The
local Republican lenders are Inclined to
favor the Indorsement of Barber the
Populist candidate and so most of
them express themselves Tbe Iodu
llsts seem to be indifferent In the mat
ter or rather not desirous of such ac-
tion apparently They do not want
anything said or done that may savor
of a trade or deal and ore content to
flhl their own fight A prominent Re-
publican said today that the only trade
contemplated Is an Indorsement at Ibir
ber In which the Populists would get
everything and the Republicans noth-
ing Republicans believe that the com
bined vote of their party and the Popu-
lists will elect Barber but there Is little
prospect of that gentleman polling alt
the opposition vote The Democratic
campaign managers here are eon Aden t
that no combination will be able to
endanger Pendletons election How-
ever a Republican Indorsement of llar
ber will give considerable of a boom to
that gentlemans campaign and awak-
en Democratic actlWty througnout the

The Popple Turn Vp
Waco Oct 14 The Populists of this
county are not a little torn up as It
were In consequence of the E Tom
Cox episode The old Populist veteran
has many friends In the organlntlon
who seeing the settled determination
of the majority to down him nave re-
frained from declaring themselves It
Is clear however that there are many
in the party who stand by the old
chieftain The result all around will
be to weaken the organisation It la
believed The chances are that Cox
will continue to be a candidate for
county Judge If necessary as an Inde-
pendent and while he never has had a
shadow of claim to success will never-
theless receive a number of votes Cox
Is one of the few well fixed Pops
He has considerable property and a
number of investments which arc un-
derstood to yield him considerable reve-
nue When In the city he put up nt
the Pad tic hotel Instead of a wagon
> ard His long record In the party
service permitted him to do all this
without calling down upon him open
criticism for violation of the Jefferson-
Ian simplicity which the Pops demand
In their party but all these things
were recalled in connection wth his
membership In the alleged cotton seed
trust and weighed against him

the unusually large fait list of Bluo
Crass 1y cblng bees Yesterday at the
close of the Beattyvllle fair Oscar Mor-
ton a prominent citizen of Stanton
In Powell county went on the war-
path Only two weeks ago Morton kill-
ed his man at Stanton and was out on
JMWQ bond to appear next week at the
Powell circuit court When Morton ar-
rived at the fair he piocceded to get
drunk and then went to hunt for Sher-
iff William Slmms who was his deadly
enemy a feud of long standing having
existed between the two men Slmms
aud Morton met near the entrance to
the fair grounds and after a tew words
both drew their gun A quick ox
change of shots followed Morion us-
ing two gun His first shot brutce the
sheriffs arm at the elbow and John
Hogg a friend ot Slmms whfpppod out
his gun and Joined in the battle When
the smoke cleared away It was found
that Sheriff Slmms was dead having a
shot through his breast one In his
abdomen and another through hli aim
Morion was shot through the neck
while Hogg wo unhurt Before a
crowd could collect Morton was hus-
tled to the county Jail and placed under
guard
The people became Infuttated und a
big meeting was held at onco ou the
square Colonel John Drummoud
mounteda barrelind made a speech
In which he safdttmi the murderer
mun be hanged and that the work
must be done quickly and in perfect or-
der Morton had killed two men In
less than two weeks time and he must
die by the rope
A mob was quickly formed and
inarched to the Jail The Jailer was
averpowered and the keys to Mortons
cell obtained He was round Ijlng In
hls shirt sleeves on the floor ot his
cell and after a bitter struggle was
uelxed and dragged out lie then be-
came very Impudent and told the mob
ho did not care what they did with him
pruwded they dd then work quickly
After a short parley he wus taken to a
little bridge some distance from town
nnd the rope was placed around his
neck The leaders dtew their guns
nnd told him to Jump or else he would
be riddled with bullets Turning
around the doomed man cursed his
captors und uttering wild Imprecations
leaped into space The Jump broke his
neck and after dangling in the air for
some minutes he became still and a
volley of shots were tired into him
The mob then disappeared and the
body was left hanging from the bridge
At noon today It was still there
None of the mob made any attempt to
conceal their Identity and the hang-
ing was conducted with as much for-
mality as ir It had been ft legal affair
The dead sheriff was only recently mar-
ried nnd leaves a young wife The
murderer was a wealthy man who lived
nt Stanton He has killed three men
Coming to the fair he attempted to kill
the fireman of the lialn because he
would not Increaie the speed of the
locomotive he was running This Is the
eighth lynching In Central Kentucky in
the pnst six months and the people
have determined to put down murder
If they have to take law Into their own
hands every time a man Is killed
Mortons relations are Incensed over
the lynching and It may be that some
of the old feuds will be reopened
