Distilling company the strongest ene-
my of the whisky trust today made
public the results of an experiment
yesterday by whieh a fair quality of
spirits from sugar beet molasses is
obtained The success of the distilla-
tion Is more Important from the fact
that It will afford additional proIt to
the sugar manufacturers and cheapen
the manufacture of whisky The
initiatory steps In the manufacture of
toe sugar spirits was taken several
days ago when the first car of the mo
lasees was secured and the contcnta
drawn off Into tha Immense vat In
which the alkali which has been
gathered from the soil In which the
beets hae grown Is neutralised To
tha raw molasses 1s added about ten
pounds of malt and yoast and a quanti-
ty of the chemical preparation which Is
depended on to convert the salts It Is
left In the vat for a short time until
the alkali Is transformed when the
process of fermentation begins and It
Is then pumped Into one of the large
fermenting vats where It lies for not
mora than 72 hours until the process of
fermentation Is complete The pro-
cess was never tried before in this
country though It has been In use In
Curope The truit people claim It Is
not chesper than the old process and
Is of little conaequenca

ow of a tangible clue to the Identity uf
the men who accomplished the remark-
able feat of train brigandage in Vir-
ginia 1rlday night ha yet come to
light The little town of Quantlco
which conslsta of half a dozen houses
almost Isolated from cU lllzatlon Is
overrun with detectives today Officers
from New York Philadelphia Balti-
more and Washington are there There
are almost as many theories alloat as
there are detectives but the only point
on which the theories are practically
harmonious are that the robbery was a
carefully planned work executed by
experienced professionals and that the
men are probably far distant from
their ll dd ot operations before this
time
Most officers agreed that a boat play-
ed a part In the escape but no strange
crafts were suen on the Potomac that
so far can be traced The theory thut
1 the men crossed to the Maryland shore
1 being weakened on second thought
by the fact that there were no train
by which they could have escaped
within reasonable reach that night

police rays that two of his detecting
