since the days of Fats Waller
and James P. Johnson, with
the saucers on the pianos for
the nickels, dimes and quarters
in apartments in Harlem, has
there been such a rent party.
Those old-time rent parties
really were to help a family
meet the rent. Early In the eve-
ning/the young and local talent
would play and, after a profes-
sional gig, the, legendary
