Churches Set
Kindergarten
At a classroom meeting
Monday evening at First Uni-
ted Methodist Church,
groups from the two local
Methodist churches reached
a tentative agreement to con-
duct a kindergarten for the
coming school year for four-
year-old children of Merce-
des. Mrs. Roy E. Bray was
invited to serve as the
kindergarten teacher.
Tentative plans were set
for registration at El Buen
Pastor kindergarten Wed-
nesday, July 15,'between 9
and 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.
Initially, a fee of $7.00 per
child, per month, will be
paid in advance,, and kinder-
garten hours are from 8:30
to 11 a.m. the term to run
concurrently with the public
school term.
Named to joint Kinder-
garten Board for the coming
year, are Mrs. Arturo Oli-
varez, president; Mrs, Ker-
in it Natho, treasurer; Mrs.
Ramiro Cuellar, secretary,
and the Rev. Boyd Harris,
First United Methodist
Church, the Rev. Antonio
Triana, El Buen Pastor Me-
thodist C h u r c h E. R,
Broughton, Mrs.R. C. Jpnes,
Arturo Olivarez, Mrs. How-
ard Roman and Mrs. Lauro
Saldana.

Program Title
The Rio Grande Valley
Chapter of the Poetry Society
of Texas met June 28 in the
home of Mrs. J. O. Butcher
in La Feria. President of
the society, Mrs. J. L. Mc-
Nail, welcomed the members
and a guest, Mrs.O.W.Sum-
erlin of Mercedes. In the
absence of Mrs. J.B. Cocke,
Rev. O.W. Sumerlin present-
ed the program. In develop-
ing his subject, “Free
Verse”, he read passages
from the Bible, William
Shakespeare, Walt Whitman
and others. He culminated
his talk by reading two of
his own compositions. Mrs.
McNail, Mrs. Butcher and
Mrs. H.S. Hensley also read
their poems.
In the new yearbook com-
piled by the program chair-
man, Mrs. William Farris,
it was revealed that the next
meeting will be October 24.
Winners of the High School
Poetry Contest and William
Bard, Poet Laureate of Tex-
as, will be the honored
guests. Mrs. Daffan Van-
Kirk of Harlingen will be the
hostess.
Jose Bernal
Earns Medal
Specialist Four Jose L.
Bernal, 21, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Paulino Bernal, Mer-
cedes, recently received the
Army Commendation Medal
while serving with the 92nd
Engineer Battalion at Long
Binh Post, Vietnam.
Spec. Bernal earned the
award for meritorious ser-
vice as a welder in the bat-
talion’s Company A.
Last Rites
June 25
Funeral services for Mar-
tin Rodriguez, 79, were
Thursday, June 25, at Our
Lady of Mercy Catholic
Church with the Rev. Mathew
Powers, OMI, assistant pas-
tor, officiating. Burial fol-
lowed at the Catholic Ceme-
tery with arrangements
under the direction of Garcia
and Trevino Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Bonifacio
Rodriguez, Pilar Rodriguez,
both of California; Victor
Valdez, Michigan; Johnny
Valdez, Rolando Perez and
Anastacio Villarreal all of
Mercedes.
Mr. Rodriguez, a long-
time Mercedes resident,
died Monday at Knapp Memo-
rial Hospital. He was born
in Montezuma, San Luis Po-
tosi, Mexico.
A rosary was said every
night at the funeral chapel.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Modesta G. Rodriguez,
Mercedes; three sons, Boni-
facio, Barstow, Cal.; Jose
and Pilar, Rich Grove, Cal.;
three daughters, Mrs. Gre-
gorio Hernandez, Rich
Grove; Mrs. Pablo Valdez
and Mrs. Dominga Salinas,
both of Mercedes; 42 grand-
children and 15 great-grand-
children.
