host the Rio Grande Valley
Zone Rally of the LLL at
the Mercedes church on Sun-
day, March 9. Registration
begins at 5:30 p.m., followed
by a dinner at 6.
H. E. Vogel of Mercedes,
Zone president, will conduct
a business meeting, at
which election of new offi-
cers is planned.
Lutheran members of
school bands will provide
musical entertainment dur-
ing the dinner and a social
hour.
Guest speaker for the
meeting will be the Rev.Roy
Schkade of Austin, LLL dis-
trict pastoral advisor and
member of the board of
parish services of the Lu-
theran Church, Missouri
Synod. His topic will be
“What in the World Are We
Doing in the World”.

of Mercy Catholic Church
of Mercedes.
Miss Gonzalez, a Merce-
des high school graduate,
attended Pan American Col-
lege.
Mr. Calvillo is employed
with the Internal Revenue
Service as clerk-typist in
Austin and is attending Nix-
on Business College of Aus-
tin.

Club Speaker
Mrs. Charles Stransky
was guest speaker for the
regular meeting of the Ale-
thean Study Club on Febru-
ary 24 in the home of Mrs.
J. V. Adams.
Mrs. Stransky told about
and demonstrated flower ar-
rangement by making an ar-
rangement of yellow chry-
santhemums and foliage,
which was presented to Mrs.
J. Edwin Harvey, as she
was the winner in the draw-
ing for the door prize.
Mrs. Woody Tullis spoke
on the library drive, and the
club voted a contribution to
the fund.
Mrs. Adams assisted by
Mrs. Rowland served re-
freshments during the so-
cial hour to the guests, Mrs.
Ray Smith, Mrs. Lonnie
Smith, both of Weslaco, Mrs.
Stransky, and the ten mem-
bers present.
Visit Heggens
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Heg-
gen of Mercedes and her
mother, Mrs. J. W. Sim-
mons, had as guests last
week, their cousin and
niece, Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Butler of Odessa. Another
cousin and wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Anthony Simmons,
joined them during the week-
end. This was the first time
that the families had come
to the Valley.

Miss Diana Gonzalez of
Mercedes, bride-elect of
Jesus Calvillo Jr. of Austin,
was honored with a miscel-
laneous bridal shower Sun-
day, March 2, at the home
of Mrs. Basilo Torres of
Mercedes. Hostesses for
the event were Miss
Margie Torres, Miss Es-
meralda Gonzalez, Miss Di-
ana Tijerina, Miss Maria
Elena de la Cerda, Miss
Maria Anita Guajardo, Miss
Fela Benavidez, Miss Elida
Garcia, Miss Catarina Go-
mez and Miss Molly Garcia.
Receiving the guests at
the door were Miss Tijeri-
na and Miss Torres.
Miss Gonzalez was pre-
sented a corsage of yellow
carnations surrounded by
white net and yellow stream-
ers. her chosen colors.
The refreshment table,
laid in off-white linen
covered with a knitted table
cloth, held an arrangement
of yellow roses and white
chrysanthemums surround-
ed with greenery and cen-
tered with a bridal doll.
Refreshments of cake, pan
de polvo, peanuts, mints,
chocolate and punch were
served to the 60 guests
present.

On March 12
Next Wednesday, March
12, is date of a style show
planned by Baum's Men's
Wear as a Mercedes Me-
morial Library Building
Fund benefit. Admission
tickets, for $3 each, include
chances to win men’s cloth-
ing prizes valued at more
than $200.
The program begins at 7
p.m. at the Civic Center and
will consist of modeling of
clothes and musical enter-
tainment.

gram, drew a charcoal por-
trait of four-year-old Wan-
da McClendon, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Mc-
Clendon of Mercedes,

(Girl Scout Week*
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts in every part of the
United States have, for 57 years stood firm in their
Promise to Do Their Duty to God and Country, to
help Other People at AH Times, and To Obey the
Girl Scout Laws regarding loyalty, honesty, cour-
tesy, cheefulness, usefulness, kindness, and thrift;
and
WHEREAS, we in Mercedes have continually
benefited by their efforts and goals; and
WHEREAS, the Girl Scout organization, founded
this week in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, has di-
rectly affected many millions of lives since that
time through membership and service; and
WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. imple-
ments its theme, ‘‘Values to Hold, Worlds to Ex-
plore” on its 57th anniversary by continuing to
serve our daughters, our communities, and our na-
tion:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Adan Cantu, by virtue of
the authority vested in me as Mayor of Mercedes
hereby proclaim March 9th through March 15th of
this year 1969 as Girl Scout Week. I therefore call
upon all citizens to give the Girl Scouts now and in
the coming year their continued interest, coopera-
tion, and support so that increasing numbers of girls
may benefit from a program which also benefits us
each and every one.
