The existence of coffee exchange
grain exchanges coal exchanges
and produce exchanges shows the
necessity for the organization of
two more exchanges a fanners
and these two exchanges should
cooperate with each other To-
day when we hear that wheat must
advance in price we are told by
the grain exchanges that there has
been a failure in crops and the
farmers have lost heavily in-
consequence thereof the price of
wheat must go up The truth of
the matter may be that the farm-
ers have disposed of their grain
and produce at cheap rates and
the grain and produce may be
stored away in elevators waiting
for the damnable scheme of the
gamblers to take effect At such
a time the farmers exchange could
notify tho laborers exchange
and the word could be passed
price for it but because tho stock ni0Ig that all reports concerning
gamblers bd willed it and their jafailuro of the crops were false
rilL for the lime was law iaui lmt the only ones to be bene
The le ons tauuht our members fittd wouii tho sharks of Wall
by the experience of tho past sixstreet ami similar places of prosti
weeksisto keep their eyes open tutiou To make a farmers ex
change and a laborers exchange
successful we the people must
control the telegraph system of
this country to that accurate and
ready means of transmitting in
and announces that there is tear formation may be within reach of
city in l certain articles of food
the price must go np in conse-
quence eery member should re-
solve and resolve out loud that
until the unhallowed hand of the
speculator has been removed from
the control of the article in ques
tion cot a pound nor an ounce
more than can be avoided will be
purchased This may be regarded
in the light of a boycott notice
that is exactly what Z intend it fori
and had I the power rested in me
iatacke the order imperative I
would order every member so far
as in him lies the power to place
an eternal boycott on every grain
and stock gambler in the United
Stales and Canada
It is estimated that the losses of
those directly interested in the
wheat deal will reach > 500000
Tho losses to the coffee thieves
will exceed J000000 Two gangs
of thievis were engaged in manip
ulating the coffee market One
of them realized 5000000 on the
deal and then quit in time to save
it Their pals the other coffoe
dealers more greedy kept on un
til their scheme exploded and tak-
ing fright they stopped short at a
heavy loss
all Today tho mainstem of the
telegraph lines of this country is
in the hands of a monopoly which
has no feelings for merchant man-
ufacturer or laborer A different
system must take the place of the
present one and tho people must
control it
An attempt was made in the
last congress of the United States
to regulate the commerce of this
country The influenco of the
railroads was so potent at Wash-
ington that the interstate com
merce bill was shorn of its strength
and it passed into law in such a
form as to enable the railroads to
make it appear that it was a blow
at the rights of the people The
end in view is to have the next
congress repeal the law on the
plea that congress or the people
cannot regulate or even interfere
with the railroad system of this
country The people must re
member that eternal vigilance
is the price of equitable rates of
anspotation whether of person
or freight and instead of allowing
the interstate commerce law to be
repelled it must be amended in
the interest of those for whom the
railroads were built When the
charter of a railroad company is
asked for it is mentioned in the
petition that it is required for
the public good That is the
only place wherein the public is
ever considered until the stock
holders are robbed and the Uni
ted States government supposed
to represent the people and the
public good is asked to appoint a
receiver to manage the road If
the people of the Uni ted States
can manage and make a railroad
of the suckedorange pattern pay
with the aid of a receiver the
same agency can successfully op
erate railway and telegraph lines
and make them pay When they
do this the producing farmer and
and laborer can exchange produc
tions both will be better recom
pensed than today and the occu-
pation o the gambler in grain
and meat will de gone

So long as the prosont rush of
cattle to tho market continues the
present low prices will continue
out sooner or later the reaction
must come and then those who have
been able to hold over will be in a
good condition to supply those who

The Farmers Alliance
In speaking one day of the
Farmers Alliance which origin
ated in Texas and lias spread
thence to all neighboring Gulf
States The TunesDemocrat ex-
pressed its opinion that the pur
pose of the association were gen
erally excellent and most of them
practicable and that it had a fine
field if it confined itself to its leg
itimate business the improve-
ment of tho condition of the farm
We ventured the furthei
opinion that if on the other hand
it deserted this legitimate and
promising field and became mixed
up in other matters and antago
nized other interests this might
defeat the great objects it has in
view Hero is a case in point
The Farmers Alliance of several
counties in the Gulf States have
determined to hold primaries and
nominate political tickets for
county and district officers
Tho result of this plan must be
unfortunate It makes little dif-
ference whether the Alliance tick-
ets are successful or defeated
The moment the association goes
into politics and commences to
nominate candidates it will be
gin to make enemies to arouse an-
tagonisms it would otherwise nev
er have known and to create dis
sensions within its own ranks
The unfortunate disposition shown
in this country to carry all ques
tions into politics has been the
ruin of many a good movement
The farmers of Texas Louisiana
Arkansas and Mississippi are
strong enough to get such legis
lation as they need and when
they organize separately and nom-
inate purely agricultural tickets
tho natural result will be to arouse
other interests in opposition to
them their tickets and their de-
mands
The Farmers Alliance has cut out
a big undertakinc for itself in the
many reforms and changes which
it is seeking to bring about in the
transaction of agricultural busi-
ness It has a herculean task be-
fore it without seeking at the
same time to interfere with and
control politics Any class pol-
itics is bad and the class which
organizes separately almost inva
riably finds itself opposed by a
combination of th e other classes
It is to be hoped for its own
success that the FarmersAlliance
and its subordinate lodges will
confine themselves to the indus
trial enterprises they have under-
taken instead of embarking in
the stormy sea of politics which
has wiecked so many other prom-
ising organizations X O Times

some of the i ssues of the day and

Cleveland will undoubtedly be
the nominee of the Democratic
convention His nomination and
election were experiments the first
time As for tho tariff the Ohio
resolutions meet my ideas pretty
welL Everyone knows that there
is too heavy a surplus in the treas-
ury and it is constantly increas-
ing I believe that tho internal
revenue system is nearly right I
would remove the tax on tobacco
but would maintain the tax on beer
and liquor The internals revenue
must be tho basis of our reform
policy and from this our country
must receive its supplies Custom
duties should be taken off tho nec-
essities of life and what is called
raw material Everything that
enters into the manufacture of
necessary articles should be put
upon the freo list Material that
requires labor in its work should
be free Luxuries should remain
on the list I am not a destruc-
tive freetrader Id have you
know I would not touch tho iron
schedule at present The Morri
son bill that was reported favora
ably by the ways and means com
mittee was a good one and would
have come very close to ray idea
I think it was a fair bill I think
this country is destined to be one
of the greatest manufacturing cen
ters of the world For that reason
1 would not interfere with the pro
tection of manufactures nt present
but tho tax on coal should be re
moved Three quarters of nil
tho coal in the world i s in
this country and I believe it
should bo free to enter The great
question of the day is cheap fuel
and tho government should do all
it can to solve the question There
is no reason why the United
States should not compete with
tho rest of the world successfully
