Farmers finding a surplns time
upon their hands will find it prof-
itable to go over their fields nnd
destroy tho burs and other noxious
weeds It is said that one years
seeding makes seven years weed-
ing If this be true no noxious
weeds should be allowed to produce
seeds on any farm in the land
There aro enough burs now grow-
ing on one acre of land which wo
could mention near town to seed
tho whole county They should
be destroyed before they do much
more damage

There is some complaint that
the hog law which was adopted
gome fivp years since in tho vicin-
ity of and including the town
Those who are troubled only are to
blame as the law is very plain
There aro no provisions for the re
peal of this law and people must
enforce it or enduro the inconven-
ience of having the hogs run at
large
Only a little bilious attack It
will wear off in a few days is a
familiar expression but it dont
wear off It develops into bilious

Tho merchants of San Saba
should try to prevent tho country

H they would try I believe they
could hold the home trade There
is an impression amongst the farm-

If tin greatest men of the world lnvo
counted the founding of schools the great-
est acts of thci lives and tho teachcrof n
great man is held in as high honor as his
pupil what credit khall be given to those
who give of their best to establish a train
ilg school for teachers From tlie East
and from tho West from tho North and
from tho South they call tho wisest and
best oi the worlds instiurtors and place
before tho peoplo the riches ot iutellect
stores of the best earth can gire Such
has been done this summer by the people
of Galveston and the least acknowledg-
ment that tho peoplo of the Southwest
can make is to admit tbe excellcnco of the
work and send its fauie abroad
Summer Normals galore there have been
but with the best intentions on the part
of the promoters of such money was
lacking to begiu with and it was impos-
sible to secure tlie talent from abroad
necessary to put any of tho district nor
mals schools on a tooting with the great
national ones We here mako no rcter
enco to the various Chautauqua Circle
as they are altogether difl crent This re-
fers to normal schools alone
It was necessary for a city and one fav-
orably located to make the moie And
well did Galveston do it She gathered
the best talents to bo had in Tolas and
out of it College professors presidents
of universities and of normal schools men
who had given their lives to teaching
scientists and those who had traveled far
and wide specialists whose works wcro
authority in their department men known
not only in the United States but in oth-
er lauds all these were suuimoucd and
came Each gave of his stores ofjearning
much of which was the result of observa-
tion and had thcreforo a double value
and an interest never to bo equalled by
books
Tho difl crent schools were so arranged
that each went on independent of theoth
ers The Ball High School threw open its
perfectly appointed building to tho Nor
Dial and large as it is it was nono too
spacious Tho schools wero conducted in
diflerent wings of tho building The most
interesting of all was tho school of Science
In the large Scienco Iloom lined with cab-
inets of fossils shells miuerals apparatus
etc wo gathered to learn from Dr 15 G
Colo President of tho Normal School of
Donaldsonville how to teach the various
sciences experimentally Lectures on
Physiological Botany Phyics and Physi-
ology were supplemented by lessons in the
making of apparatus and the hours spent
seemed all too short when we remembered
that the doctor would be obliged to leave-
ns before the school was out to attoud the
Exposition His work on Fhysics for
teachers only now in press will supple-
ment his lecture and we had learned too
much from theso not to bo anxious to se-
cure a copy of his book Doctors Cole and
Uensoldt also lectured npon the use of the
microscope
Dr Everhardt of tho University of Tex-
as in lectures on Chemistry illustrated a
series of lessons in Chemistry for the
High Schools Many outside of the Nor-
mal came to listen to these That they
were of absorbing interest the size of the
audience and its eager attention attest
Into the fairyland land of scienco Dr
Heusold introduced us The imagination
of tho Scientist was hts and tho universo
his theme He discussed the formation of
tho world and from the most magnificent
theories advanced by the greatest think-
ers to the perfection of the tiniest atoms
the microscope conld show thedoctortold
us of the wonders and harmony of all cre-
ated things What he had seen of all the
wonders of the sea of the curious growth
of life from timo so far Lack that wo and
all that tho world no contains sank into
utter insignificance as we listened won-
ders his voyages and explorations had ro
vealcd to him the doctor told us of and
wheu hobrought hisuiicroscorie wijhspcc
imeusthat he hasbecnallhislifecollectiug
we crowded eagerly around to seo the
strange things we had heard about as
well as to cxamino more closely tho fos
sils shells and minerals which had beS gtner
gathered from various countries and iis ve
the doctor had brought to illustrate tit you
lectures Ono microscopic specimen w s eye
bo of interest to the people of your sectiunapMly
but is perfectly pure It was onehalf by
onethird of au inch in size and appeared
to be chased but by instruments far moro
delicate than any possessed by any jewel-
er Under the instrument this looked
like a bunch of tho most exquisite tiny
grapo leaves the delicacy and beauty of
which are past description Have you
seen tho Llano gold was tho universal
question and ncaily every day was the
tiny beauty on exhibition The doctor
said it is tho only specimen of the kind in
the world most virgin gold presenting a-
very different appearance under tho mi-
croscope Had this specimen been seen
by tho Beethoven Literary Circle it would
have answered forever the question once
dohated by the talented members society
Aro the works oi Nature moro beautiful
than thoso of Art
Mention must also bo niado of Dr Heu
soldts account of his scientific explora-
tions in Ceylon This distinguished gen-
tleman now occupies the chair of Geology
and Mineralogy in Columbus College
From the material world to tho universe
of mind is a leap impossible to some and
the versatility and breadth of intellect
displayed in the Normal were never better
illustrated than by tho eagerness with
which the large audience heard tho lec-
tures of Dr Baldwin on Psychology Dr
Baldwin wonld bo everywhere known as
tho President of tho Sam Houston Normal
School even if ho were not pel haps better
known from his work on Psychology Ho
accepted tho presidency of tho Texas Sum-
mer Normal School and the management
proved its wisdom by tho choice N < er
did there livo a more enthusiastic teacher
It seems to bo a general opinion that a
certain bent of mind is required for any
lovo tor tho study of Psychology to be felt
but when Dr Baldwin held his hearers
all earnest attention twico in tho day
notebooks open aud pencils dying fast
while he told us of the mind showed its
simplicity in intricacy and 6howcd how
a knowledge of its laws is necessary to
tho teacher that ho might apply theiu
to his work when he kex > t them fascina-
ted not only with his subject but by tho
magnetism of his manner kindling in his
hearers his own enthusiasm and when
every one in tho room ciowded around to
bid him goodbye and to hear him say I
dont know your names but I know your
faces and you aro all my friends I want
to shake hands with you there was no
question as to which of the great profes-
sors had made the most brilliant success
He has the wisdom of the ages deep down
in his eyes said ono lady and the wis-
dom of ages was in his teaching
Space is not left to tell of the brilliant
scries of lectures on tho English poets de-
livered by Dr Leslie Waggoner well
known as chairman ot the Faculty of tho
University of Texas They wero indeed
fine and it is to hoped that tho Doctor
will decide to publish them
Discussion of the lectnrcs of Maj llriug
hurst Tres of tho A it M College of
Maj Ilinghaui of Bingham School N C
ofSupt Cooper and of Miss Conway
must all be omitted And tbe schools of
English Botany Calisthenics Art Kin-
dergarten Primary work the pen would
run away with the subject Not that one
could take them all Tho Schools of
Scienco aud Pedagogy alono wero more
than ono could do justice to These were
the departments to which the purchase of
a membership ticket entitled the holder
The Schools of English an extra was un-
der tho charge of professors from tho Gal-
veston schools and was designed for thoso
who wished to obtain certificates t f
this your correspondent cau say but little
as she only visited it once or twice The
Schools of Business was givcH np for lack
of time Aud with all this the corps of
professors will Lo increased next year as
it is designed to make this ouo of the
great summer normals of tho country
Next yearthe grounds of the Normals
will bo prepared for tho reception of visi-
tors
This cannot close without a word said
for tho hospitality of tho citizens of Gal-
