What a grand array of talent is
offering for the governorship
Candidates are so numerous and
so worthy that one could wish
that Texas might have a dozen
governors all at once How long
will Texas remain one and undi-
vided with fifteen or twenty am-
bitions young men aspiring to bo

cians can not get what they want
under existing conditions they
seek to change them nnd it would
not bo much cause for wonder

suggested many leading men who

Those who do not believe in re
ligion are fond of talking about
religious cranks but there is no
crank worse than the infidel crank
These fellows take it for granted
that every religious person is
either a hypocrite or an idiot
One of this class of infidel lunatics
was in the recent constitutional
convention in Idaho He was the
only one who refused to sign the
new constitution and his reason
for refusing was that the docu
ment contained the name of God
The fellows name is Pelfley and
that he is a fullfledged crank is
shown by the fact that he de-
clined to draw his pay for his val
uable service in the convention
A bill to promote the general

Tho govornor of Eelawaro says
of the whipping post in that state
There is not in the state of Dela
ware today a single penitentiary
If a man beat3 his wife or sets
fire to his neighbors barn or
breaks into a house he isnt shut
up with full time and opportunity
to learn all the tricks of deviltry
that he did not know before As
a preventive of crime the whip-
ping post has much greater terror
than a term in the penitentiary
and I have never known a man to
come back for a second dose He
simply leaves the state or if ho
stays in Delaware he leads a very
quiet life To be sure it is a
relic of barbarism but it is our

The Idaho Jnrr
The Idaho constitution provides
that the verdict of threefourths of
a jury shall be the verdict of the
jury Why not What sense is
there in demanding a unanimous
verdict As a UBual thing the
opinion of nine men would be bet-
ter than that of three men We
believe that it will insure better
verdicts The requirement of jury
service are so exacting that they
have a tendency toward bad ver-
dicts A stubborn man has been
known to turn an entiro jury be-
cause the jury men were unwilling
to bo locked up all night Where
a unanimous verdict is required
it givesone or two men the power
to inflict gross injustice upon the
mojority and it is because of such
possibilities as being locked up to
please a stubborn man that men
shirk jury duty If the majority
or threefourths of the jury were
allowed to decide a case we should
find that there would be less trou-
ble in getting jurymen
However we would never lock
up a jury anyhow There is no
more sense in locking up a jury
than there would be in locking up
the Judge It is true that in our
cities the character of jurymen is
often so low that many of them
would be cheaply bought But
make jury servico easier and we
shall get better jurors men who
cannot be bought any more than
the Judga can bo bought Wo
congratulate tho Idaho constitu-
tional convention upon its dis-
play of good sense Bural
A Word for the Utile Ones
Many a child goes astray sim
ply because homo lacks sunshine
A child needs smiles as much as
flowers need sunshine If home
is the place where faces are sour
and words harsh and faultfinding
is ever going on they will spend
as many hours as possible else-
where Let every father and
mother try to be happy Let
them look happy Let them talk
over tho
The roots J
make them happy
Keep the childrens sympathies
for by so doing half the danger of
their going astray is averted No
one is so sensitive over a slight as-
a child and if her sorrows are
made light of at home she will
more than likely turn elsewhere to
find sympathy and will often find
it in society she would otherwise
shun No sympathy is so dear as
a mothers and a girl who has al
ways been encouraged to tell all
her troubles to her mother knows
she will find a patient and loving
hearer and consellor and will not
be apt in her youth the time
when she most needs counsel and
advice to do anything that she
cannot tell her mother all about
Tho grown up woman with a fam-
ily of her own counts ns one of
her sweetest blessings the tender
affection of her own mother
Mothers are apt as the family
increases to unintentionally omit
many of the little sympathies and
tokens of love which had hitherto
been lavished on the older chil
dren but are now transferred to
the new arrival Or perhaps as
the cares of the family grow heav
ier the mother has so many calls
upon her time that she cannot stop
for the fondling that once was her
pleasure But surely there is time
every day for some words of love
or sympathy and this one little
word spoken in the morning oft
times cheers and helps the recipi-
ent all through the day The idea
too that the children as they
grow older and are more away
from homo do not care for these
attentions is wholly at fault for
no truo child ever grows too old
for love or sympathy Selocted
Tho extra session of the congress

nut One day it is given out that
it will be held and the next that it
will not be According to the
latest speculations no extra ses

ress this fall which will require
all tho attention of some of the re
publican congressmen in looking
after their fences nnd as the re-
publican majority is small they

Feed Your Orchards
If the best quality of fruit is to
be secured and it is only the best
quality that pays tho best profit
it is very necessary to keep the
soil at least reasonably rich
While in many cases it may be
sufficiently rich when the trees
are first planted yet tho growing
of several crops while the trees
were making their growing with
the growth of grass that usually
follows and the crop of fruit that
have been grown after the trees
commenced bearing must to a
considerable extent have decreas
ed the available fertility It
should be understood thai tho
growlngur trees and maturingcr
a good crop of fruit draws nearly
or quite as heavily upon the avail-
able plantfood in the soil as that
of any other crop and it is there-
fore just as necessary to apply ma
nure to the orchard if the fertility
of the soil is to be maintained as
to the soil in which the field crops
are grown
In nearly all cases the best way
of applying manure is to have the
ground well plowed and then scat-
ter tho manure broadcast as even
ly as possible then working into
the soil with the harrow or culti-
vator But with the orchard as
with the meadows it is not always
desirablo or best to plow up and
then a good plan is to use only
wellrotted manure and make it
fine and scatter evenly over the
surface Ashes is a good fertili-
zer to use in the orchard but the
manure and ashes should not be
applied together or there will be
more or less loss of ammonia
When the quanity of manure is
insufficient to sow broadcast over
tho whole surface considerable
benefit may be derived by scatter-
ing under the tree as far out as
the leaves or branches extend It
is not a good plan to pile it up
around the trunk of the trees
Whatever material is used will
be best scattered broadcast over
the soil under the trees first and
whole surface when
jujnjuieia buuic
the
extend out a considera
ble distance and the trees will be
able to derive a larger amount of
benefit if tho manure is scattered
broadcast With young trees the
manure should not be allowed to
come in contact with the roots In
manuring trees when setting them
out the manure should be worked
into the soil thoroughly before
filling in around the roots One
of the poorest plans of applying
manure to young trees is to throw
the manure in the bottom of the
place prepared for the treb1 and
then set in the tree and fill in with
soil So far as possible the mit
nure should always be thoroughly
incorporated with the soil N J
