I A KABYLn WOM l > 3 OBNAME TTS
Tho principal jewels of a Kabyle wo-
man are double shoulder pins joined to-
gether by a chain jometimes with an
mullet in the middle used for fastening
the dies on tbe shoulders Her dress
owesrery little to the art of the dress-
maker The bodice is formed anew each
morning by being secured on the shoul-
ders by these pins which are generally
ilike
Brooches are of many different forms
ind sizes The large round brooch with
hanging chains and ball pendants is only
worn after a woman has borne a child
tnd even then with a difference Thus
tho mother of a daughter wears hers in a
bodice but the proiud mother of a son
sets hers in the middle of her forehead
rerf iit5i the balls falling over her eyebrows
From this honored position it is some
times torn and flung in rago and defiance
it thefeet of tho husband when some do-
mestic difference of opinion has induced
him unduly to chastise the wearer
Earrings are made of different patterns
Some are small to hang from the lobe of
the ear some are very large to hock
over the ear and re supported by strings
lied at thotop of the head beneath the
headdress yThe long dangling chains
which always haog from these large car
rings ore debated at intervals with lots
of rough cofj and with colored glass
beads
The diadems worn by a Eabyle beauty
ire very handsose and original They
ire usually mads of three plaques of
metal joined together by hemispheres of
bright metal wiich have a very striking
effect
The plaques are always enamelled and
enriched with round pieces of coral set
la rbws such as are seerThjA Jewish high

placed around the turbanshaped
dress and is supported in its place by
means of small hooks which fasten on

coolest side of the range where it cannot
possibly boil let the beverage settle on
the lees for from thrco to fivo minutes

ynty Stanley Came Back
When the great African explorer was
by many persons given up for lost and
even the most sanguine were full of fears
for his safety says the Irish 2fatt there
was one woman in London who never
doubted that he would return The
woman was Stanleys landlady When-
ever any one suggested tho possibility
that he might never be heard from she
replied with perfect confidence
It is impossible 3Ir Stanley has not
given up his rooms and I am sure he
will return
Stanley did return though the world
in general has not till recently been
aware of the imperative engagement
which made it impossible for him to do
otherwise

Two hundred and fortyeight times does
the Bible refer to the angels j et I never
heard or read a sermon on Angelology The
whole subject is relegated to the realm
mythical weird spectral and unknown
Such adjournment is uuscnptural and
wicked Of theirufe their character their

Bible gives us full length portraits and why
this prolonged and absolute silence concern
Inztbem Angelology u my theme
There are two nations of angels and they
are hostile to each other the nation of good
angels and the nation of bad angeK Of the
former I chiefly speak todaj Their capital
their headquarters their grand rendezvous
is heaven but their empire is the universe

beings are more thoroughly organized than
any army thet ever marched They ure

more to do with your destiny and mine than
any beins in the umverte except God May

For the purpose of showing the char-

are one hundred million But these are only
the angels in one place David counted twen-

Chances of Death In War
No doubt every reader has seen the
statement that it takes a mans weight of
lead to kill him in battle and they may
ha e considered it to be merely a rhetor-
ical hyperbole suggested by the fact
tint comparatively few out of the whole
number of shots fired in heat of battle
take effect Marshal Saie wo behove
first made the assertion which forms the
base of the above when he said it would
take 125 pounds of lead and thirtythree
pounds of powder to put each of the ene-
my in tho long trench AVild and vis-
ionary as this may seem it appears that
there was more truth than poetry in th9
remark With all tho improvements
which have been made in the art of war
since tho days of Saxe Cassendi the
French savant proves that the great
Marshals philosophical remark still holds
good
At the battle of Solferino according
to Casscndis carefully deduced calcula-
tions a comparision of the number of
shots fired on the Austrian side with tho
number of killed and wounded on the
part of the enemy shows that 700 bul-
lets were expended for each man
Tioundcd and 4200 for each man
killed The average weight of the ball
used was 30 grains therefore it must
have taken at least 12C kilograms or 227
pounds of lead for each man killed
Vet Solferino was a most important and
bloody battle In tho FrancoPrussian
war the slaughter caused by the needle I
gun among the Frencti soldiers shows

race or the Camel
As a matter of fact and in spite of its
having carried Mohammed in four leaps
from Jerusalem to Mecca seven miles an
hour is tho camels limit nor can it
maintain this rate over two hours a slow
pace beyond which it is dangerous to
urge it lest as the Asiatics say it might
break its heart and die literally on the
spot TVhen a camel is pressed beyond
this speed and is spent it kneels down
and not all the wolves in Asia will make
it budge a ain The camel remains
where it kneels and where it kneels it
dies A fire under its nose is useless
