The Benefits of Exercise
By Mary Beth Mazurek, C.PFT., N FPT
Exercise has a magical way of correcting what is wrong with our
body. Whether It is being overweight, underweight, fatigued, blood pres-
sure problems, cholesterol, osteoporosis, and the list goes on...
A person's metabolism slows down through the years due to inactiv-
ity. A lot of this is the result of living in a society where most jobs are sed-
entary, so it takes a little while after starting a program to speed up your
metabolism. As your metabolism increases it enables you to bum more
calories everyday. As you increase your muscle tissue through resistance
exercise you burn more stored body fat However, those pounds won't
melt off magically It takes a long term commitment to a regular exercise
program to achieve your goal and maintain it. Remember, it took years for
your system to slow down, give it a little time to reverse the damage.
Studies have shown that exercise improves the quality of
sleep, and a quicker-onset with one feeling more rested in the morning.
This may be due not only because of improvement in health but also
because exercise reduces your level of anxiety and helps you manage
stress more effectively. Exercise definitely goes hand in hand with mental
health It can help decrease sadness, tension and anger. One
of the reasons for the feelings of well being that are generated during and
after exercise is the body's natural release of endorphins, adrenaline,
serotonin and dopamine These chemicals released by the brain are the
body's natural pain killers and can lead to an increase in feelings
of happiness
Another benefit of exercise is preventing or helping in the
treatment of type 2 diabetes. Also, a fit heart can pump more
blood and can sustain it longer with less strain. The greatest benefit occurs
as the muscles improve the efficiency of their oxygen use. Exercise alone
cannot prevent or cure heart disease, but if can reduce the risk.
Blood pressure: The obvious answer is reduction of weight, but an-
other reason exercise helps with high blood pressure is because
it helps keep arteries elastic, even in older people, which in turn keeps
blood “owing and blood pressure lower. All of this decreases the tendency
of the blood to clot in the vessels This is important because small clots
traveling in the blood are often the cause of heart attacks and strokes
Everyone is interested in reversing the aging process. As we
age our muscle tissue can waste away. Our muscle receptors naturally
begin to close but we can lift weights to help keep those doors open. This
is very important since very important insulin and amino acids cannot be
taken up anymore if they shut down. Guess what else is affected when
this begins to happen? It affects our brains!
So exercise can be viewed as a preventative, or wellness activity that
may actually help prevent physical and emotional conditions.
There is just so much more to exercise than what is included in this
short message. If you would like to know more, join us today and begin
your exercise program now.
