For many of us 40°
temperature is the perfect
temperature of the year. This
temperature can be a nightmare
for many because this perfect
weather can be the beginning of
runny noses, 24-hour coughs and
headaches. The following is the
worst symptom: the “I do not
want to see you, hear you, or talk
to you” symptom after periods of
sneezing, swollen glands, and
long hot sweaty nights.
Many will be part of the
unfortunate group who will
suffer from the flu or cold. What
are the symptoms? The
symptoms of a cold vary. It may
lead to a sinus infection or
bronchial infection. (Fever, sore
throat, Congestion, ^nasal
discharge, sneezing, coughing,
and facial pain) Treatment for a
cold is Tylenol, Advil and some
decongestant. This may last
three to five days.
The symptoms of the flu
usually start four days after
becominginfected with die virus.
There are three types of
"influenza" (flu) A, B, and C.
All three types have different
symptoms but are treated the
same. The symptoms are the

following: fever, nasal
congestion, deep chest cough,
fatigue, sweating, diarrhea,
muscle aches and pains,
weakness, dizziness, swollen
glands and loss of appetite just to
name a few. There is medication
that can be given the first three
days of the illness. Contact your
physician and let them know if
you feel you have the flu.
* The best medicine for colds
and flu is prevention measures.
Good hand washing and not
sharing objects you touch with
other infected persons. Proper
rest, proper diet, and proper
medication can make the flu
season more tolerable. A well-
balanced healthy diet filled with
plenty of Vitamin C, Vitamin E,
etc. will keep the immune system
strong. Plenty of fluids,
particularly soups (chicken
soups) and vitamin-rich drinks
such as vegetable, grape, or apple
juices.
I will now share my mom's
and abue's (granny's) one-of-a-
kind advice to avoid this nasty
cold and flu season. First of all,
they would tell me to cover my
mouth every time I step outside
in cold and windy temperatures.
If necessary they would suggest
to wear a scarf. Secondly, she
would tell me never to step onto
a cold floor without a nice thick
pair of socks and not go outside
after a hot shower. They
recommended to wait at least an
hour before going outside or
even better to shower the night
before. Finally; her most
important advice was to drink a
delicious hot (te de manzanilla y
canela) mint and cinnamon tea.
This always made me feel better
no matter what the illness was.

Sunday best dresses brought
out of places where they were put
away for a special occasion,
pretty hair dos, and a little extra
excitement in the air. must be
something special. Must be the
birthday party. There is nothing
quite like a birthday recognition,
we may share the day with many
others but each one is unique and
it is our time to celebrate and
have a party, and have a party we
did. The big smiles were only
rivaled by the beautiful corsages
furnished by Comanche Florist.
No party is complete without
cakes and there was plenty of
cakes that were cut and placed on
plates until they could hold no
more. Thanks ESA, Brookshires
volunteers that;
brought or sent cakes. . The
singers were in good voice and
enjoyed by all. The goody bags
filled and provided by the We
Care Volunteers were a hit with
their little friendly ghosts.
