(You remind us of the physi-
cian we read about once. He
went to see a patient, looked
him over, but prescribed noth-
ing and gave him nothing. He
did this several days. Finally,
the patient, as patients do some-
times, died. The physician,
with a long, sanctimonious face,
looked at his dead patient and
sadly said: “Poor fellow, what
a pity he didn’t take some medi-
cine and get well.” When we
were asking and seeking for
suggestions, advice and help,
not one of you gave any; after
(the propositipn had been “off
the docket” for a long time, you
deem it wise to tell us we might
have done better. Perhaps ao,
gentlemen; if to do again, with
the experience at hand, we]
might do better. But why this
advice on that proposition after
so long a time? That part of
your report reads as if it bad
been written by a road con-
tractor.
But seriously, gentlemen, it
occurs to us that if you really
were desirous of knowing why
the .Court has not done more
than it has; if you really desired
to know what the Court was
trying to do and intended to try
to do; if you honestly desired to
lend your assiBtanoe, whatever
it might be, to better the condi-
tion of roads in our county; if,
in good faith, you were looking
to the prosperity and welfare of
th# entire county in those
spects,- then you would hi
asked tbjs Court, or some mem-
ber thereof, to discuss these
matters with your honorable
body. You did not do so. If
ypu did npt know it, then you
could have found it out iu about
two minutes and a half, that the
Court never
tbe road like it is.
mg officer of tbis Court talked
with two contractors about this
matter last summer, and told
them we wanted their figures on
the matter as soon as we could
get to it. In point of travel,
this road is by far the most im-
portant one in the county; wp
are are also sure that it is
not in good connition. One of
the members of tbis Court has
lad full authority to have a
drag or grader on this road as
needed: but with the amount of
heavy travel there ia continu-
ously going on over it, day and
night, it cannot bd kept in fair
