A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY
Helpers Seek Community’s Assistance
We, the members of the pers, would like to give our
Mercedes Community Hel- Sincere appreciation to the
GOOD THINGS
ARE HAPPENING
Graduation time is here again, and
with it comes a wish for the success
of those now leaving high school.
The entire community has the chance
to look with pride upon the achieve-
mants of the voune men and women of
the class of 1972. They have already
gained one plateau of excellence and
are now ready to move on to other
areas of challange.
With them, wherever they go, they
will carry the pride and hopes of
the people of Mercedes... and the
knowledge that Mercedes is support-
ing them in all they do.

parties listed below for their
contribution to the “Teen-
Center”. We are working
hard to fix up for the en-
joyment of the youth of the
community.
We would also like to ex-
tend our graditute to the par-
ents of the members of our
club for the encouragement
for us not to quit these rea-
sonable causes we are trying
to seek...
Here are two causes to
mention right quick: The
“Teen Center” located on
main street on the third floor
of the “Florist Shop”. This
center is to keep the youth
out of the streets and out of
trouble, etc. Secondly, we
preach continued higher ed-
ucation. T o do this we are
giving “three” one-hundred
dollar scholarships with the
money we earned working
hard in the community.
Now, as president of
M.C.H., I would like to get
across to the rest of the
nice citizens of Mercedes.
I think that all citizens who
read this article should be
wise enough to look into
what this club is doing and
what they are asking from
the adults. I believe that
most of the time a group of
J.R. Hinojosa Graduates from University of Houston
people get together and or-
ganize themselves they do
so because they want to be
heard and assisted.
Now, we are organized
but we are not being assist-
ed by the expected number
of adults within the commu-
nity. I know that it would be
a hurtful and terrible thing
for our club to go down the
drain just because of a lack
of co-operation from the
community.
The Mercedes Community

tance with the ‘Teen Cen-

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
CHRIST
ABOVE ALL
Mercedes, Texet
I heard a speaker recently quoted Gandhi as
saying, “God Himself dare not confront a hungry
man except in the form of bread.” That is a good
thought regarding the care and compassion of God,
but as for man and his conception of bread, it must
be held in proper balance. The only perfect Man,
the Divine Son of God, in His wilderness tempta-
tion, was confronted by the devil with an offer of
bread. He spurned it, saying, “Man shall not live
by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds
out of the mouth of God.”
Bread is most important, as this perfect Man de-
clares. But something else is even more important:
the Word of God. So we could putit this way: “Every
man, apart from the Word of God is a hungry, fam-
ishing man, and no man when confronted by the Word
of God dare refuse it.” You see, man is more than
animal, and he has greater needs, and that is
why, if a choice must be made between bread,
and the Word of God, he must choose the Word of
God.
