The Austin Statesman, in a long
article upon the barbecue at flic
month ol the ilrazoSon the 5th inst.,
speaks of the .dolmens of the country
to be specially henefltted by the open-
ing of the month of tho Brazos, and
says :
On the Brazos, and upon Oyster
creek and Old Cailey, there are fields
of cotton that are yielding a halo anil
a half to the acre ; corn fields that
have produced^oven witli tlds drouth,
forty to fifty bushele.to tho acre, and
grccii fields of sugar cane that pro-
mise tho richest returns, One gen-
tleman on Old Caney, in Wharton
county, has already saved a bale amt
a half to the acre, and another on that
same far-famed bayou will gather
nearly six hundred bales from less
than five hundred acrosof land. Stub
conditions ns these, surrounding such
a region, must soon make it develop
into greatness. Shattered fortunes
will be gathered together, and the
“Four Counties” must become, as na-
ture intended them to bo, tho most
noted agricultural region known. All
Texas should rejoice at these facts.
It is proper that the birthplace of
Texas independence should have
something liesides historical associa-
tion.

A Nows correspondent from Austin
in a long article upon the Lunatic

that tho plans refected, should have

A News special from Palestine

Dr. D. 8. H. Smith, treasurer of
the International a few years since,
started a farm of about GOO acres on
the outskirts of Palestine, laying out
200 acres in smoll fruits and vegeta-
bles. His success was llattering.
Tho American Refrigerator Transit
Company, through their general
agent, Captain N. P. Turner, have
just dosed a lease with Dr. Smith by
which tbe company will work the
farm, planting tbe entire 000 acres
in fruits and vegetables, for tbs pur-
pose testing, under careful practical
management, tbe culturo of such
produce in this Section and shipping
it directly North by their cars. They
claim that they will bo able to do-
posit in tbe markets of St. Louis,
Chicago or New York fhe fruits and
vegetables as fresh and palatable os
when taken from tbs garden. It will
bo a pecuniary blessing to tbis fruit-
growing section of Texas if tbe pro-
ject succeeds.

They are honorable, they are useful,

that whenever anybody announoee lo
you that the civilization capable of

American Republio and of tbe State
