A Matter or Custom
Turlington took much pleasure
in ridiii his wheel through the
parks and in seeing the women
ride
Dont you think he wits ask-
ed one day that some of the
ladies have their skirts made un-
necessarily scant this year
No he replied not at all
Why should they lie compelled to
wear long Happing skirts to in-
terfere with their comfort and de-
tract from the grace that women
naturally have on wheels The
skirts are none too short They
might even be nhorter without
hurting propriety at all This
old idea that a womans clothes
must be made to hide her feet is
all nonsense We live in nil en-
lightened age now It was all
right once to punish a man for
insinuating that the queen of
Spain had legs but wo are not
living in nicdeval timer
Its all a matter of custom any-
way You never think anything
of it when you see a lady down-
town now with skirts on Unit
reach but half way from her knees
to her ankles and there is no tea
son why she should not wear a
bicycle skirt that comes only to
her knees if she wants to
Yet sir The women are
emancipating themselves They
re showing some independence in
their taste for dress They know
that we men know they have
knees so whats the use keeping
them hidden and making them-
selves uncomfortable
I claim that a woman can be
just as modest in a bicycle skirt
that shows the > ps of her golf
stockings as it is possible for her
to be in one of tho e gowns that
drag along behind her and gather
up all the dirt in the streets
lint it happened that Turling
ton met his sis tcrin the iiarkxni > xlt
day and she wore a skirt that
reached but little below her knees
Turlington narrowly escaped
having a lit right there and lie
vowed that he would disown the
girl if he ever saw her in such a
scandalous costume again
Womans Rapid Aihmiccmciit
A fresh zest is lent to travel in
Arizona by the piesence of a wo-
man highwayman who with the
aid of nuother bandit has hold up
the stage coach between Globe
nnd Florence and relieved the
passengers of their money and
valuables This giddy lady wore
corduroy trousers on this occa-
sion tucked into the tops of her
long boots a red Bhirt and a red
necktie but her crimps betrayed
her sex as they escaped from un-
der her hat However she kept
the victims covered with her re-
volvers while her pal went
through the stage load and was
game to the end Women are en-
croaching more and more on the
preserves of men but since they
have gone into the Claude Duval
business we really must draw the
line and beseech that they will
confine their depredations to cities
where men can scream for the po-
lice with a chance of being heard

ter
For Isabels hand
Yes sir It is a mere formal-
ity I know but we thought it
would be pleasant to you to have
me go through with it
Whats that A mere form-
ality
That is what I said
And may I inquire who sug-
gested that asking my consent to
my daughters marriage was only
a mere formality
It was Isabels mother sir
