“I suffered torment from aches
and pains in my muscles and
hips,” continues Mr. Ely. “In fact,
it reached the point where I could
hardly get along, even with the
aid of crutches. I dreaded for
night to come, for I knew that I
would be lucky if I got just a
few cat-naps. After nearly every
meal I would have that full,
bloated feeling in my stomach. I
had to use strong laxatives con-

whit I have been doing to look

American
I always think it does a news-
paper editor good to get out from
behind his desk and ace how folks
In other parts of America look, and
think, and act.
And that’s what I’ve been doing
these past weeks, touring the
country from Michigan to Texas,
California to Maine. It’a a mighty
encouraging experience. Not only
because of the different points of
view you run into—but because
of the tolerant« which reconciles
those different points of view.
I mesn the tolerance of a Penn-
sylvania farmer far the habits of
his city cousin; the tolerance of
folks who vote one way towards
those who vote another; the toler-
ance of those who prefer soring
water towards those who enjoy a
moderate beverage like beer.
From where I sit, it’s that great
American trait of tolerance—re-
spect for individual tastes and
liberties—that makes thia country
strong. Let’s never lone it!
