The editor of the Gazette was
considerably eurprised ono day last
week at receiving a markod copy of
the Eagle Lake Advertiser orftain
ing a half column editorial part o
which wo hero reproduce
ABUSES ALL EAGLE LAKE
In commenting upon the attack
made upon young Wenzol in the
city during the carnival last week
ho Shiner Gazette abuses not only
the person committing the crime
but Boems to blame all Eaglo Lake
This ib all wrong The peoplo ol
this city are law abiding they n el
potno more strangers in a single
month than Shiner doea in a year
There is no comparison In the tno
towns but this has nothing to do
with tho point the Advortisor ex-
pects to make Whilo deploring
the beating up of young Wenzel
let it bo said that no assault was
intended on him at all The par-
ty ohnrgod with iho offense if he
committed theassault did not in-
tend o striko a young whito boy
but on the other band thought he
waB striking a negro The evi-
dence shows this While deplor-
ing any violation of the laws of our
county and not wishing to defend
the guilty we do not think the
blow would have been struck ot r11
had yoUng Wenzel informed the
party that he was white His as
Btilarrt no doubt thought he was
repenting tbo impudence ofa negro
This is all thcio is to it
