Attitude holds the
key to success
nvmk *Jt dtumr Mpbcat dukjRn'j movies, a professional football
((taper dills a tone* of rag tag kids that football is 80 percent

» Vapou we yprising fans and prognosticators
after a sluggish start. The Vaqueros dropped
and then proceeded to win their next three with
a saff detense tent has aAowed only one touchdown.
Why Ok change? Simply pat — altitude.
No one who is familiar with the San Diego Class of ’96 ever
questioned their mhtebc ability. The youngsters who are seniors this
yew have always demonstrated a keen athletic ability. They were an
important factor in the school’s district championship two years ago.
Sometimes success can have a debilitating effect. It can go to one’s
». head. That may be the reason for the Vaqueros’ poor showing last year
£ and slow start this yew.
The Vaqueros that have taken the field the last three games are not
, the same that were the field on opening night. On that night, players were
, grumbling about the position they were playing, about the amount of
*• playing time and about the coaches’ instructions. Some were, busy
• making alter game plans with friends in the stands or talking to
cheerleaders.
r Coach Juan Hinojosa did a strange thing. He called a time out late in
r the game and gathered his entire team. He did not want to discuss
> strategy, the game had long since been lost. He told his players that
attitude was the key to being a successful team. He repeated his lecture
\ after the game. He told his team their was no T in the spelling of team.
• Moreover, if players were not happy with the way things were progress-
; ing they should consider some other extracurricular activity.
We can only assume that Hinojosa and his staff continued this
| message on the practice field and the locker room as the weeks
> progressed. Now the Vaqueros we truly concentrating on the game on
; the field. They have become each others best cheering section. The
I offense urges the defense to excel and the defense cheers on the offense.
‘ There is no dissension on the sidelines. Distractions by others are held
». to a minimum.
I The results have been dramatic. The Vaqueros have played champi-
S' onshipcaliber football. Hinojosa told them that first night that he had not
>: promised them they would win every game, only that they would win
; district. That is a reality now, provided the players can maintain their
’ focus. Success—you will remember—can have a weakening effect on
^ the mind if not properly handled
We congratulate Coach Hinojosa and his staff as well as his players
£ for this new found altitude and its resulting success. We wish them well
£ in the weeks to come. ,
The right attitude can go a long way in football as it can in life. That
lesson should not be lost to others such as fellow students, teachers,
administrators and the community at large.

Sharp not
happy with
proposals
AUSTIN - State Compile
John Sharp has determine^ that
funding formulas now pending in
the U. S. Congress would cost
Duval County taxpayers between
$6.3 million and $7.2 milliM in
federal Medicaid cuts oferthehext
seven years. On the average each
local Medicaid recipient will re-
ceive $6.13 less weekly.
“This unacceptable legislation
asks Duval County taxpayers' to
subsidize the health care of people
in other states,” Sharp said- -“It
would send twice as much money
to a senior citizen in New York as
toaseniorcitizen in DuvalCtfoflty.
There are 3,290 Medicaid're-
cipients in Duval County. They
presently receive a comfnhed
$7,208,969 or about $2,246.48 per
