"GUSTO" PHILOSOPHY
by KobexLW Blackshear
There is ayairly familiar
television commercial which
exclaims that "you only go
around once in this old life, so
you'd better get all of the gusto
out of it that you can!” While
the idea behind such an appeal
is to sell a high-level sudsing
agent, there is a far greater
appeal to adhere to a particular
school of thought—the "gusto”
philosophy
Inherent in this school of
thought (though it does not
require much thinking, because
it appeals to man's base nature)
are the following ideas: no
belief in life after death and a
belief in “all get and no give.”
So the “gusto" philosophy may
be summed up as follows
“Since your life on this earth is
a purely physical one, and when
you die, you’re dead, vou may
as well do your own thing and
get what you can get while you
can; because you’re not ac-
countable to anyone, except
yourself ”
This philosophy is nothing
new, for the doctrine of
Epicurus (342- 271 B’C) was
one of pure pleasure seeking
and gross materialism. But
against such a philosophy Jesus
shares a parable of the rich fool
