Considerable criitcism is being directed at the material
furnished for the J‘Voice of America" broadcasts. The
criticism is richly deserved. It fa amazing that material of
the nature used could be sold to the ccmmyttee And amazing
that anyone woald -thi^k that material of the hind that was
used would accomplish anything in the' way of selling Amer-
ica to the world. About aH a lot of it could accomplish would
be to prove that the moronic type of mind existe in this coun-
try also.

One can’t do much without a license these days. It takes
a license to hunt and a license to fish, and a license to trap, a
marriage license to get married and an auto license to get
a date.
By THOMAS HASTWBLL
The simplest way to do away with that overstuffed and
overfed look that some people seem to have woqld be to have
them visit Europe for a year and subsist oi) thp average na-
tive diet. This under the present circumstances, in spite of
the large food shipments from this country is guaranteed to
produce a slender-figure in from one to three months. There
mill be no necessity for self-denial on the part of thoee who
-give it a trial. TYy as they will they will not get enough food
to permit them to put on any extra weight

HOBING THE WEEDS OUT OF
OUR LIVES: I remembeo as a boy
that my father used to raise quite
• garden. He was a good garden^
er and took a lot of pleasure in it.
He used to take me out with him
and allot to me a portion of the
ground to hoe and to keep fryq of
weeds. It seemed to one sometimes
that the weeds grew faster than
the crop and that it was a constant
battle to keep the greeds down that
the cr6p might have a chance to
grow. I remember one-day-* fak-
ed him what the weeds were made
for. I argued that if there were,
no weeds it would not he necess-
ary to hoe the garden. He explain-
ed that unlesy the garden was
hoed regularly It would not produce
well, rt was necessary to loosen!
the soil about the roots to give the
small roots a chance to grow, and
that except for the weeds, which
made regular cultivation neceesary
some people would never hoe their
gardens. I have thought since that
this must be the answer to s lot
of things that happen in our lives
which at the time we do not under-
stand. We are required to strive
to overcome them and by doing so
we produce sturdier and more self-1
reliant lives. They are the weeds
that we are forced te hoe out in
order to produce the kind of a life
that we later will enjoy.
