Dear Sir Tho department of
Horticulture is very anxious to
have a fine display of nuts of all
kinds at the Columbian Exposi-
tion and as you are interested in
nut growing I would like to hear
from you in regard to making an
exhibit An early reply will
greatly oblige Yours Truly
S M Samuels
Chief dept of Horticulture
The above reached mo by last
Fridays mail I answered it by
saying that if the people here
would help I would do what I
could also that I felt sure we
could make a respectable exhibit
Its because you solicit news of lo-
cal interest and everything that
will benefit the people our peo-
ple that I hand you this for pub-
lication By this time most o
your readers know of the interest
I have taken iu pecan culture in
this county I have for years con-
tended that if this particular
branch is handled right that it
will bring in a greater revenue and
and advertise this county more
than any one thing that can be
produced here In fact our natu
nil facilities give us a monopoly
of the trade in this business But
to bring about such a reputation as
this particular region is capable
of Our whole system of culture
must be revolutionized and this
means to work it up on scientific
prinoiples like every other branch
of industry that amounts to any-
thing When I first gave my at-
tention to pecan culture there was
no one from whom I could obtain
any practical information How-
ever by exercising all the patience
and perseverance that was appor-
tioned to me I have overcome
some of what used to look like the
almost impossibilities of success
ful pecan culture My experience
for tho last 9 years in planting the
nuts grafting and budding the pe-
can is worth a great deal to this
county If they are willing to do
something to help me 6how to the
world that we have a fine field here
for the Horticulturist a class of
people who aro always on tho look-
out for something of special merit
The main point that I want to
convey is that in this particular
industry we have something of a
commercial value a commdity
that we can handle from one pound
by mail to car load lots and almost
all clear gain Tho people of San
Saba contribute as a rule liberaly
as any people anywhere according
to their means but it looks from
tho retnrns of their efforts in the
past that we have been throwing
away mouey but wasnt the cause
of getting no rehires for our labor
because our exhibits were iu com-
mon with all the other counties of
the state and had no commercial
value of special merit

President Harrisons message
with reference to the late troublo
between tho United States govern-
ment and the Chilian government
was delivered to congress Jan 25
It is quite a lengthy article and
dates back to the very beginning
of the trouble and recites all the
incidences out of which the trouble
has grown Ho firmly backs up
tho course pursued by Minister
Egau and recommends that in the
cousideration of this matter that
congress act judiciously and pru-
dently ever preserving tho digni-
ty of our government but yet act
in such a way as to afford ample
protection to American citizens in
foreign ports Chile must como
to time or she will get badly crip-
pled up
